Earlier this year, I shared that one of my resolutions this year was to continue on the path of greening my cleaning, after having found my son spraying his toy trains with a combination of window cleaner and chrome cleaner. We had of course kept these cleaners far out of reach, but my sneaky six year old still found a way to get to them. I knew at that moment that something had to change and started slowly phasing out all of our 'mainstream' cleaners. So when The Ultimate Green Store asked me if I'd like to review a few green household cleaners, I was naturally thrilled (no pun intended!).
For those unfamiliar, The Ultimate Green Store is literally just that- a one stop shop for all your green living needs. They offer a wide variety of products from cloth diapers, to household goods, to bath and beauty...and everything in between! If it's green- you're sure to find it there! For this review, they sent me two all natural cleaners from Better Life: 2 am Miracle Nursery Cleaner and Oak-Y Dokey Wood Cleaner and Polish.
First up, let's just take a moment to admire this fun packaging (and those names!). Once again, I know that packaging *should* have absolutely no impact on a product, but I'm certain I cannot be the only one who loves fun packaging, right? It always put a little smile on my face when I go to pick them up and see the names...cleaning is never a fun thing, so anything to make it a little more enjoyable is a good thing in my book!
First up, I couldn't wait to try the Nursery Cleaner. It's no secret that with babies come messes...and lots of them. The 2 am Miracle offers a natural cleaning solution for all surfaces babies can come in contact with- cribs, changing tables, diaper pails, toys, walls, mattresses...it can even be used as a pre-treatment for clothing, bibs and cloth diapers! It both cleans and deodorizes all surfaces. With my daughter's super sensitive skin, I'm always careful about what we use on her clothing (and particularly diapers) but being free from toxins found in typical cleaning supplies, I can feel much better about that! The lavender scent smells amazing and is scented naturally with essential oils. (As an added bonus promotes relaxation in the nursery.) So far, I have primarily used it for cleaning toys, and have found it works wonderfully!!
Next up, the Oak-y Dokey Wood Cleaner. To be entirely honest when I read that the scent was Cinnamon Lavender I could not figure out how on earth that could possibly smell good. To me, they just didn't seem like they'd blend well...but I was wrong! I actually discovered I really loved it!! The smell is noticeable, but not overwhelming. After making the switch to natural (mostly homemade) cleaners, one area where I knew I could use something a little better was on our wood surfaces. Our homemade cleaners got them clean, but didn't give much shine. This was the perfect solution. It did not make them overly shiny/slippery as some more mainstream polishes might, but it just looked much better.
If you haven't greened your cleaning yet- go take a look at your cleaning label. What do you see? Chances are it's a lot of warnings and an ingredient list that may as well be in another language for as much sense as it makes... Now take a peek at Better Life's labels:

I found them to be much easier to read and understand! The warning on Better Life is pretty simple...stating only that while the product is nontoxic it is meant for cleaning, not drinking and keep out of reach of children. Not nearly as scary sounding as the warnings on most household cleaners. Having children that like to stick anything and everything in their mouths, I'm happy that I can actually make sense of the ingredients and know that it's all natural and kid safe!!
Another thing that I really loved about these cleaners is the smell. Aside from the great scents that I mentioned already, I love the the smell in general is not overwhelming. I've noticed after making the switch to natural cleaners that on those rare moments I do use other cleaning products, my nose burns! With the natural scents in these cleaners, I have not experienced that!!
