A few months ago, I shared with you a super fun DVD series for kids called 'Buck Denver Asks What's In The Bible'. If you missed it, this series was created by Phil Vischer- creator of Veggie Tales and aims to teach kids all about the Bible in a way that is both fun and easy for them to understand, but while still keeping true to the facts. While Veggie Tales was more focused on the lessons of the stories, What's in the Bible was more focused on the education...while still keeping much of that silliness that we'd come to know and love in Veggie Tales. Even as an adult, I found myself learning new things as I watched. I LOVED it! So did my son who had recently gotten really into Bibles and Bible stories.
So, when I was given the chance to review the new Christmas special 'Why Do We Call It Christmas?' I could not wait!! Neither could my son. He insisted we watch it immediately. And when it was over, he insisted we watch it again. And again and again and again. In fact, he loved it so much that we watched a total of 5 times back to back. Wow! To say he loved it was a complete understatement!
So, what's this DVD all about? Let's take a look:
About the movie: Approx. 60 minutesCutting down trees? Hanging stockings? Santa Claus? What do any of these have to do with Jesus' birthday? More than you'd think! Join VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer along with intrepid newsman Buck Denver and all his friends on an amazing journey into the world's most popular holiday! Sure, you know the Christmas story. But do you know the story of Christmas? Don't miss the whimsical, educational, Christmical party to end all Christmas parties as Buck Denver Asks … Why Do We Call It Christmas?
Contains the following topics:-Where do we get the word Christmas?-When was Jesus born?-What do Christmas trees have to do with Jesus?-Who is St. Nicholas?-What is Hanukkah?-Who is Emmanuel?-Luke 2 Story
As a Christian mom, one of my big goals is to make sure that I'm teaching my children the true meaning of Christmas. We love the excitement of Santa Claus and opening gifts, but I want them to know that that's not truly what the season is all about. We've read many, many story books on the subject, talked about Jesus' birth, etc...but I honesly wasn't sure if my son was really understanding how it all went together and I really wasn't sure how to help him understand either. This movie was the perfect solution. It doesn't take away from the fun of Santa Claus or in any way suggest he does not exist or that we shouldn't write letters to him, but instead shares the history of Saint Nicholas. It addresses some of our traditions and how they are in fact rooted in non-Christian customs adapted over time. It shared the story of Jesus' birth and Hanukkah and so much more. I loved how much my little guy learned from the DVD... and I loved knowing that he actually was in fact understanding and taking it in. There are actually a few quick questions for discussion included and as I talked these over with my son, I could see what he'd learned. Amazing!
