As a child, I loved reading. I could always be found with my nose in a book. There was something so amazing about reading a story and being transported to another time and place, some place unfamiliar to my own home...but full of excitement and adventure. Oh, what would it be like to live in such a time and place? My imagination ran wild.
As a mom, I could not wait to pass on this love of reading to my children. I wanted them to experience the same far off worlds I had experienced...to live the adventures through those beloved classic characters. Still, I found that when I had a little boy, perhaps some of my personal favorites- The Secret Garden and A Little Princess were not the best picks for him. He needed something a little more adventurous and boy friendly...Rasmus and the Vagabond is just that.

After running away from an orphanage, nine-year-old Rasmus finds the world a cold and unfriendly place until he befriends an extraordinary tramp called Paradise Oscar. Together they meet more adventure than they ever imagined, solve a mystery, and catch the culprits. Reassume dreams of finding a family and a home someday. But when he does, will he be able to part with his new friend and life on the road?
About the Author:
Astrid Lindgren, the creator of Pippi Longstocking, Emil, and dozens of other world-famous characters, has thrilled three generations of children with her storytelling. She is the only children’s author with a literary prize, a theme park, a museum, a satellite, and a minor planet named in her honor. (After this last honor, she suggested changing her name to “Asteroid Lindgren.”) A jury appointed by Swedish Radio’s Culture Department to elect the “Author of the Millennium” voted Astrid Lindgren second after William Shakespeare. She was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal and heaps of other awards and honors.
Now, let's be honest...who did not LOVE Pippi as a child? Her spunk, her fun adventures...it was a fantastic story...so it could only be assumed that this tale by the same author would live up to it, right? It certainly does just that! As I said, my favorite part of reading was being taken away to a time and place that was different from the world I was living in. For this generation, that means a time and place before video games and computers and cell phones...a much simpler time and place without all the hustle and bustle. Rasmus and the Vagabond did just that.
Now my son, though an advanced reader at 7 years old, still doesn't quite have the focus to tackle this one just yet, but I know that when he's ready he will enjoy this book just as much as I did. It's full of adventure and fun...and is just a classic example of pure, fantastic story-telling... ideal for any boy or girl to enjoy!
