There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.-John 15:13
What a beautiful verse! As a military wife, this has always been a verse that was close to my heart, it's a reality that many unfortunately face. With Veterans Day quickly approaching, there has never been a greater time to stop and remember the sacrifices that are made by the men and women in the military, and their families at home. Today, I'm excited to share with you a fantastic movie that tells one such story, Faith of Our Fathers.
John Paul and Wayne are two young men in search of their fathers. Problem is...their fathers have been dead for 25 years. Eddie and Steven are two young men in search of their sons...whom they've never met. In 1969, Eddie and Steven are with their squad deep in the jungle of Vietnam on a five-day mission to retrieve fallen comrades. They write letters to their wives, often mentioning their love for their sons, one, who is an infant and one yet to be born. In 1994, John Paul and Wayne go on a five day road trip to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC to see their fathers' names. Along the way, reading those letters, they begin to get an understanding of who their fathers were and how they died. Trials and mishaps, both funny and sad, complicate the road trip for the boys. The horrors of war and the testing of faith manifest themselves for the young men in Vietnam. Ultimately, in parallel stories - 25 years apart - the fathers and sons are bound together forever.

Now, I must admit, I really don't like war movies. Maybe that makes me a bad military wife, but it's true. They've just never been of much interest to me. But this is not just a typical military film. While there are scenes from Vietnam, it really does take place more in the current time and along the road trip that these two sons- strangers whose fathers had served together- take to go see their fathers' names on the Vietnam Wall. And like in all good road trip movies, things just don't go as smoothly as planned! With the flashbacks as letters written by Wayne's father are read, we learn more about how their fathers Eddie and Steven knew one another and more about the wonderful faith that John Paul's father possessed...and how that faith of just one man impacted others' lives- not just in his lifetime, but in years to come. It is a fantastic story, and one that I really enjoyed! It had a very interesting mix of humor and emotion that I appreciated as movies of this nature can be entirely too depressing!
I will say that when I first heard about this movie I was most excited to watch it because I'm a huge Candace Cameron Bure fan. I was a bit disappointed to discover that her role in this one was actually pretty small. We see her here and there, but this movie really does focus on these two men. As much as I would have loved to see more from her though, these two really do a great job and I truly enjoyed this movie regardless!
