Summertime is almost here!
Can you believe it? The warm weather has arrived and kids are slowly starting to get out of school! With summer's arrival, many of us have started updating our children's styles--- shorts, play clothes, tank tops--- whatever will keep them cool and enjoying their summer activities!
Of course, we cannot forget about summer hair too! Now, summer hair for my son has always been easy! Shave it off and rock that cool buzz cut all summer long. It keeps him cool, and is a hairstyle that actually suits him very well anyway. But my daughter? That's another story! She has long hair that is always in her face and on her neck! Being in the long hair club myself, I know what a pain that can be! Have you ever tried riding with the windows down (or doors off) with your hair blowing in all directions!? Or had the humidity making that hair stick to the back of your neck in the summer sun? Not fun! So, today I'm sharing a few of my favorite kids' summer hairstyles to keep kids cool AND stylish!
The Side Pony
My daughter has a pretty extreme side part so the side pony is a staple! High, low, with or without a scrunchy, this 80s do looks super cute on little ones all summer long!
The French Braid
I know the french braid can be a little intimidating, but check out a few YouTube tutorials and I promise it's quite easy to pick up! Again, because of my daughter's side part we usually do an Elsa style braid, but you can go straight back, two braids, a messy bun at the end, or even just braid back the bangs to keep it out of their face! So many options!
The Upside Down Topsy Tail
Remember the old topsy tail style from the 90s? Do that same method upside down for a simple and cute updo! Simply put hair in a ponytail, form a little opening above where your holder is and push the tail up through the bottom, tighten and you're good to go!
With these three basic styles, you can create so many great looks all summer long!! Of course, no matter what styles you decide to go with, a great style starts at the base--- proper hair care! And summer brings some special considerations too keep in mind. We all know to use suncreen to protect the skin from the sun's damage... but what about our fair! Between the sun, the chlorine and/or the salt water, summer can wreak havoc on our kids hair just as much as it can their skin! Thankfully for all our summer adventures-- from the pool to the lakes to the woods--- Fairy Tales Hair Care has us covered!
I was recently sent a selection of their Sun & Swim collection to try out for myself.
First up, the Lifeguard Shampoo and Lemon-Aid Conditioner. Now, as a blond, I remember being told as a child that if I was in chlorine too often, it would turn my hair green! Yuck! Now, I can't say that it actually ever did happen, BUT the reality is the chlorine can strip the oils out of hair leaving it dry and brittle. Likewise with saltwater. The Lifeguard Shampoo is created using orange, grapefruit and lemon extracts to gently and effectively remove that leftover chlorine, sea salt and minerals left over from swimming! The Lemon-Aid Conditioner then using a blend of pro-vitamins and minerals meant to restore shine, manageability and leaving behind silky soft locks. Now, we have not yet been to the pool yet this year, BUT we tried it out anyway and loved how soft and smooth it kept my daughter's hair. And I must admit, we loved the fun summer citrus scents too!
In addition to the shampoo and conditioner, they also offer the Coco Cabana Spray. This can be used before and/or after exposure to the sun to help protect, detangle and hydrate hair using the infusion of coconut and banana extracts. It's also color safe, so us mamas can enjoy it as well. Of all of the products, this was my favorite! Not just because it works (it does), but that scent! To me, nothing says summer quite like the scent of coconuts so I could not get enough! It smells amazing! Having a Jeep, it's also great to throw in my bag with a comb so that I can get rid of those inevitable 'Jeep hair' tangles wherever we go!
Of course we know that not all of our summer adventures involve swimming time! In fact, one of the things my son is most looking forward to is fishing and camping with his dad! And for that, Fairy Tale Hair Care also offers their own Bug Repellant. It is specially formulated with a blend of Lemon Eucalyptus oil, soybean oil, cedar bark, citronella, peppermint and rosemary blend to help keep mosquitos, flies, fleas, gnats, and other biting insects away for hours! It is made with 98% natural ingredients and DEET-free and it is safe and effective for the whole family! I know the 'lemon eucylyptus' might have you wondering if you really want that strong scent--- but I assure you it's not overwhelming at all. When I smell it myself, I only notice the citronella--- certainly much better than your more mainstream insect repellants! This is one we have been putting to good use and while the bugs aren't in full force just yet, have noticed they tend to leave us alone while using this product! It'll be the perfect addition to camping trips and walks through the woods... or even just our every day backyard play!!
My kids love the fun scents. My daughter loves the name and castle graphics (okay, okay...I do too!). But as a mom, I love that these are more natural products that I can feel good about my children using that actually work! All products are free of harsh chemicals, pesticides, toxins, paraben and sulfates and are now dairy, gluten and nut-free too! Amazing, right?
