The time has come, school is back in session! Kids everywhere have started back or are starting back in the weeks to come. For many parents, that means the age ol' battle of homework.
Let me tell you... with my son, it truly is a battle! Given the choice between helping him with his homework or having a tooth drilled... well, I'm no fan of the dentist either, but I'd have to flip a coin. This year, I want to get started off on the right foot. I want to have everything set up to make the homework battle as painless as possible. Today, I'm sharing some tips:
Disconnect.
The best thing we can do for our kids is to make it easier to focus... that means everything stays off until the homework is done. TV, phones, computers... sit them in an area away from it all. And that means us too... no checking our phones to see what we're missing, but be there to help as we're needed!
Make a Plan.
For many kids, the idea of homework can be more overwhelming than the actual work itself. This is certainly true for my son. Creating a game plan, broken into parts can make it see much easier. Obviously what that looks like will depend on your own child, the amount of homework they have, etc. For us, we write it down in an easy to follow checklist. We start with the easiest, and work our way through the hardest.
Designate a Spot.
If you are able to have a separate desk just for homework, that could of course be ideal. Set it up with extra pencils, paper, erasers, etc. If you don't have an area that can be used JUST for homework, that's okay too, just try to always do it in the same spot. Pick somewhere quiet, with few distractions. For us, that's the kitchen table... plenty of room to work, and no temptation to watch TV!
Be Prepared.
The most important thing I have found when it comes to getting the homework done well, is being prepared for ANYTHING. Keep extra supplies at home--- notebooks, a calculator, pencils, and of course, a pencil sharpener! Nothing- and I mean NOTHING- can cause a homework meltdown faster than a broken pencil and a bad sharpener. It has truly ruined many evenings around our household. When homework can already be a struggle, the littlest mishap that has not been prepared for can throw everything off.
