Are you a pet person?
I must admit, until a few years ago, I never really understood how people could be so deeply invested in their pets. Don't get me wrong, I grew up with animals. My dad-though you'd never know it to look at him- had a big soft spot for two things- his daughters and his animals. He was the kind of person that would pick up the box of puppies left on the side of the road, or take on a pet that was otherwise going to be abandoned...there were always pets in and out of our lives as kids. Still, I have a phobia of animals that kept me from getting too close.

After I got married, I learned that my husband was very much like my dad in that respect. Imagine my surprise when he came home and announced that we were going to pick up a dog. No, DOG is not the correct term--- this thing was a BEAST. A 100+ pound St. Bernard of a beast! His previous owners thought 'oh, a cute puppy'... without realizing just how large this pet would get and just how quickly they would get there. They'd planned to take him to a shelter where he would have been inevitably put down. My husband- having raised St. Bernards as a kid- couldn't stand to see that happen and so we allowed him into our home for awhile until we were able to find someone that could give him the adequate space to run that he needed. Still, in that time he was with our family there were certainly some crazy adventures to be had!
Still again, I didn't quite get this whole 'pet' thing yet.
Fast forward to a few years ago. My daughter and I walked out to our mailbox and found a tiny little kitten standing in the middle of the street. It was chilly out and she was little, so we had her follow us into the house and gave her some water. We put on our walking shoes and headed out to find her owners. By the time my son's school called that afternoon to let us know he was having a rough day and would need to be picked, we'd had no luck. We packed her into the car, and off too school we went.
The connection between my son and this kitten was immediate. For Shaun, calming has always been a struggle...especially when he was already worked up as he had been that day. But with this kitten in his lap? He was a completely different kid. Calm, cool, collected. It was astounding. It seems that we never did find her owners... she had found us.
It was through this experience that I finally understood a little bit more about what it meant to be a pet person. I realized the impact that a pet can make on us. They aren't just an animal... but when you truly connect, they are a friend, a form of therapy. They can truly be life changing! Now, that is truly something worth celebrating, isn't it?
The new movie Dog Days does just that. Take a look:
DOG DAYS is a hilarious and heartfelt ensemble comedy that follows the lives of multiple dog owners and their beloved fluffy pals. When these human and canine’s paths start to intertwine, their lives begin changing in ways they never expected. This is a sweet film about the joy our furry friends bring into our lives and what they can teach us about treating people with kindness and compassion.
Whether you're a dog owner, or just love a good ol' feel good movie, this is one that will most certainly be worth checking out. DOG DAYS releases in theaters in August 8.

Depending on where you've been, another examination by your vet after your trip might be a good idea to check for parasites such as, roundworms, tape worms, hookworms, heartworms, ticks and fleas, that were picked up while you were away.pet classiefieds
