Countdown To Christmas with ONE NIGHT: An Advent Calendar

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

Okay, okay, it's not quite Christmas time just yet... but it will be here before we know it. If you're like me, you're already planning ahead on how to decorate, what presents to give, what cookies to bake... you get the idea. I am already planning ahead get everything prepared for when the holiday season does officially begin.

For many, that season begins with advent.

But what exactly IS advent? Is it simple a countdown? Why the fancy name?

To put it simply, yes in some ways it is a sort of countdown to Christmas day... but it is also much more than that. Advent means 'coming of Christ', and the Advent season is a great time to reflect and get our hearts in the right place to celebrate the birth of Jesus! It is NOT just a countdown, but a celebration and tradition all on its own marked with scriptures and the lighting of candles.

Still, the MOST well-known advent tradition is definitely the advent calendar.

These days you can get an advent calender's for just about anything you enjoy. Socks, candy, even Starbucks! While these are all great ways to countdown to Christmas in a fun way... if you ask me, there is no greater option than those advent calendars that actually accomplish what Advent is meant to: preparing our hearts for the true meaning of the season.

Now, I'm a little Christmas obsessed, so I've seen my fair share of advent calendars over the years. None of them come close to the gorgeous artwork found in One Night. The stunning black and white design really keeps the focus where it should be-on the story it tells.... and oh what a great story that is! Each opening of the window reveals more beautiful illustrations to tell another piece of the story. You can read one window at a time, much like your typical advent calendar or read all together as a unique sort of picture book. In my family, I intend to do both. One window a day from December 1-24, and then revisiting the whole story on Christmas.

Another thing that struck me about this calendar was the size and durability. I've looked at other similar open window style calendars in the past and while some might have been beautiful, they were MUCH smaller in size, and I found the windows to be a little bit flimsy. I felt like they wouldn't last beyond one year. This calendar is large and very well made, it's much thicker than others I've looked at and truly seems as though it is one that will last for many years to come. I love that my family can come back every year and revisit this beautiful story once again.
