For as long as I can remember, music has played a huge part of my life somehow. As a child, I participated in choir and talent contests... my first job was even singing during a local Easter festival. There's something about music that can meet you right where you are. Feeling romantic? Throw on some cheesy love songs. Need a pick me up? Look for those anthems that will get you feeling like you can conquer the world in no time. Want to dance? Of course, there's a song for that too.
For me, nothing can be better than songs that have a fantastic message behind them. Music has such a power to transform our moods--- so why not use that in a positive way? Perhaps this is why my favorite genre is Christian music.
I recently fell in love with a brand new album that I am excited to share with all of you, Tori Kelly's 'Hiding Place':
With its R&B-infused, deeply melodic take on classic gospel, Hiding Place offers up what Franklin refers to as “hope-pop”—a classification that fully resonates with Kelly. “One of the things I want for this album is for people to feel uplifted and encouraged when they listen,” she says. “I want them to know that, no matter what they’re going through, there’s a God who loves them so much and so unconditionally, and there’s always a reason to feel hope. That’s what I really believe in, and I want everyone out there to hear my heart.”
Some of you might already be familiar with Tori Kelly... but not as a Christian artist. Her first album hit the mainstream charts at #2 on the Top 100 Billboard. We don't often see too many artists cross over from a mainstream pop/r&b into a full gospel album, but I for one love seeing that because it has the potential to reach a whole new audience. Fans who fell in love with the first might follow along, even if it wouldn't be their preferred genre.
But all of that aside, this album is fantastic! I can definitely hear the r&b influences in each song, and I love how soulful each one is. For me, a song can sound great without the words... but it is truly the lyrics that make me fall in love. I want something inspiring, something real, something that speaks to me on a personal level. This album has all of that. I loved the song 'Sunday' which talked about our imperfection and our every day need for grace. 'Never Alone' really spoke to me with the lyrics, " But sometimes I feel like I'm not good enough / but that's when love says you're mine / I may have took some time / but now I realize / my imperfections were a part of your plan /and if all things work together in the end / the broken will be beautiful". Wow, what a beautiful reminder, right? I feel like these words were written just for me- a reminder that I need to hear over and over again, just as so many sentiments expressed throughout the album. For those who love their classic hymns, the beautiful 'Soul's Anthem (It Is Well)' is definitely one to listen to. Beautiful soulful lyrics effortlessly infused with those beloved words, "It is well, it is well with my soul".
