Kids are weird.
I mean, I love my kids don't get me wrong, but they truly are strange little creatures. They find entertainment in the strngest of things. Share important moments or facts and they could often care less... but make it something odd? They cannot get enough.
Is it any wonder that National Geographic Kids Weird But True Books are such a hit?
Let's check out this fun series and what makes them each so fun:
Weird But True! 10 (ages 8-12, $8.99) is the latest release in the main Weird But True! series and books 1-9 has been refreshed and expanded to include 50 MORE facts than the original releases (that’s 350 facts per book if you are counting!)! Did you know that ears are self-cleaning, or that itching is contagious? It's all totally weird ... but true! Each of the ten books of this main series contains 350 surprising and amazing facts about topics like science, space, weather, geography, food, pop culture, and just about everything else under the sun, presented with fascinating photos and illustrations. The heart of the series, really! Each of these fun books are packed full with fun and interesting facts about just about anything and everything you can think of. There's not a ton of text... just quick and random facts with bright, vibrant images. These are truly perfect to have on hand for those 'I'm bored' moments. Even those kids who aren't big reading fans can appreciate the facts found within... without feeling like they are being forced to sit down and read something long. Waiting at the doctors office, stashing in the car for long (or boring) rides, rainy days... there are so many great reasons to pick these up. My 11 year old absolutely loves flipping through these!
Weird But True! Know-It-All Greek Mythology (ages 8-12, $12.99) - The newest in the WBT book family, WBT Know-It-All focuses on a specific topics structured into profiles. Weird But True! Know-It-All Greek Mythology includes everything kids need to know about all their favorite Greek gods, heroes, monsters, quests, muses, and famous philosophers. From who gave mankind fire to famous fatal flaws to who stood guard at the Underworld, this book includes all the iconic Greek myths and key characters — and then goes one wonderfully weird step beyond. These facts aren't quite as quick, but certainly offer a fun way to look at some of our favorite Greek myths. And let's be honest, there certainly is a lot of weirdness to cover. Personally, I was always very interested in reading these epic myths even as a child, so I know I would have loved this one when I was younger... okay, okay I admit...I loved it even now. I love that this book still offers those fun and random facts, but all to this specific theme so kids can really dig deeper. My son hasn't shown much interest in the Greek myths as of yet (aside from watching Hercules now and again), but I love that he can turn to this if he ever does... or when he starts studying them in school... these aren't just the facts found in the history books after all!
Weird But True! Cool and Crazy Sticker Doodle Book (ages 8-12, $12.99) - Get ready for even more DO-IT-YOURSELF weirdness in the latest Weird But True! Sticker Doodle title. With each turn of the page kids learn new information and get to try new wacky activities, from doodling prompts to crosswords, mazes to picture puzzles. This book unleashes kids' creativity in a uniquely Nat Geo Kids way. Discover amazing weird facts and then doodle, draw, or color away right on the page. Did you know that some American soldiers once rode camels instead of horses? Draw some other unexpected animal mounts! Did you know that some ice-cream trucks serve scoops just for dogs? Create some other gourmet masterpieces for your canine companion. Enhance your wacky masterpieces with 150 fun stickers included in the book. Let your kids’ creativity run wild for hours on end in this perfect boredom-buster for rainy days, car rides, or any time.
Want to bring those weird facts into a more interactive platform? This book is perfect for that. To be honest, my daughter took this one over. She's not quite old enough to truly appreciate SOME of the activities, but she is certainly enjoying the ones she can. Personally, what I loved about this particular book were some of the more creative activities. They encourage kids to think outside the box, and come up with fun and sometimes crazy ideas! These happened to be the ones my creative daughter loved too. My son isn't big on those creative activities, but he did enjoy the fun puzzles, mazes, etc. It's still again packed full with fun facts, but also with activities that go along with that. Another fantastic boredom buster to keep on hand for sure.
Weird But True! Christmas ages (8-12, $8.99) - A bit different than the main Weird But True! series, this title is focused on one theme — spreading holiday cheer with festive far-out facts about Christmas! Makes a terrific stocking stuffer. And the favorite in my Christmas obsessed household would have to be the Weird But True! Christmas book! This is the same layout as the original Weird But True! books--- fast facts, lots of beautiful images... but all with one common theme: Christmas! These facts can include facts on favorite Christmas songs, or traditions across the world, or Santa facts and science... the list goes on! They're still pretty random facts overall... just all about Christmas! That's something I can certainly get behind! We had such fun reading through, and joking about some of the stranger traditions we could incorporate into our own celebrations.
National Geographic Kids books are a staple in my household for their fun to read, but still educational style... but nothing can get quite the reaction like the Weird But True! series. Like I said, kids love all things weird! They love reading all the fun, new truths...and taking them to their friends. Are they the most useful facts? Not always, but they certainly make learning fun...and at the end of the day, isn't that the most important thing?
