Ways to Keep Your Family Cool This Summer

During the summer months the weather is warm and there’s plenty of sunshine, which means you get to spend plenty of time outdoors. Sunshine is good for our health and wellbeing, however it can spell trouble if you’re not careful. Sunburn, rashes, heat stroke and even cancer later in life can be avoided if you take the right precautions. If you want to keep yourself and your family safe and cool this summer, here are some ways you can do it.

Drink Lots of Water

It’s important for your general wellbeing that you keep hydrated, but the need increases when the weather is hotter. Your body has a natural mechanism to help it cool down and that’s sweating. It does, however, require a regular supply of fluids in order to work effectively. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty and aim to drink at least eight glasses of water or more every day.

Stay Indoors

If you want to venture out, then choose to go to places that are air-conditioned. Your local shopping mall, museum or library are great places to spend a couple of hours if you feel the need to get out of the house.

Wear the Right Clothing

If you’re at home it doesn’t really matter what you wear as long as it’s comfortable. However, if you’re outside wear loose-fitting clothing as this helps you stay cool. This is especially important if you have young children, as they cannot regulate temperature as easily as adults.

Apply Sunscreen Often

Sunburn can be very unpleasant and painful, particularly for young children. It also affects the way your body cools down. Losing body fluids is another symptom of sunburn. To protect your children and yourself, always wear a protective hat and sunglasses and regularly apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. As well as protecting your children’s delicate skin, sunscreen also helps you keep cooler.

Close Your Blinds

If you’ve got windows in your home that receive direct sunlight keeping the blinds closed lowers the internal temperature of the room.

Get Your HVAC Checked

Your HVAC system needs to be functioning correctly if you want it to do its job properly. Southern Seasons Heating and Air can help if you need air conditioning repair, Mt Pleasant, SC.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

This is a tip that not only helps to keep your home cooler, it also saves on energy costs. Program your thermostat if you’re out of the house all day to reduce the temperature by a couple of degrees before you’re due to get home. When you walk through your front door, you’ll be greeted by a home that’s comfortably cool.

Install a Ceiling Fan

Being able to create air movement helps you cool down at the same time as reducing the need to drop the thermostat further. If you install a ceiling fan and run it counterclockwise, it draws the cooler air upwards.

Don’t let the summer pass without getting out there and enjoying it. As long as you take care, you and your family can enjoy the sunshine and not have to worry about falling ill.
