Let’s talk writing! Your writing journey has been a rather long one that started early but was put on the back burner. What was it that brought you back to that passion for writing?
Ooooo…that’s a loaded question and a long story. I went through some rough times and a betrayal by someone close to me (you can see my full story on my blog under My Story https://darlenelturner.com/category/my-story/). I have always wanted to write, so as I journeyed through that hurt, I took a creative writing course. This sparked the idea for the very first book I wrote. That’s when my love of writing re-surfaced and grew. So, God does use ALL circumstances in life to grow us, right? J
After such a journey, I can only imagine the excitement of seeing this debut book in print for the first time! Congratulations! Can you tell us about that experience?
Yes! Thank you very much. It is a dream come true
and I still pinch myself even now as I’m answering these questions. I took some
amazing courses through the Jerry B. Jenkins group and had some wonderful
mentors. I started attending writing conferences in an attempt to get an agent.
I’d pitch to them and have interest but nothing happened. I wrote two previous
manuscripts before writing Border Breach. In 2017, I won the Genesis
award for one of those books. I believe this helped me catch the eye of my
agent (who is an absolute sweetie!). She started pitching both of those books
and suggested I write something to send to LIS, so I did. After doing some
revisions, my agent got the call from them. When she called me, I did a happy
dance (you should have seen my husband’s dance! haha). God is good!
What advice or encouragement would you give those other writers
who have put that love on the back burner?
I would say pick up your pen (or laptop!) again. Keep on and don’t give up. I know that’s easy to say as there were times when I felt like giving up, but I had many supporters cheer me on. Also, read writing books, go to conferences, and find a writing mentor. These will all help you.

Can you tell us a little bit about Border
Breach?
Kaylin Poirier has issues from her past she still needs
to work through when she’s thrust into danger at the Windsor-Detroit border.
This immediately puts her into the path of the constable she butted heads with
a few months ago. Constable Hudson Steeves wants to get to the bottom of a drug
ring who has targeted his nephew, but can he set aside his angst of having to
work with the beautiful CBSA officer?
I always love to hear the story behind the story! What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve crossed different borders into the States many times and I’ve often thought it would be fun to put a female border patrol agent together with a police officer to solve a smuggling ring. When I started googling some ideas, the doda drug came up and that’s when the storyline came to me.
What do you hope readers will take away from this book?
Border Breach is a
story of forgiveness. It’s my hope that readers will be captured by the
action-packed plot, inspired by the characters, and moved by the inspirational
message.
I love a good suspense story, so Border
Breach has certainly made its way to my TBR. I have found that writers are
so often some of the best readers too. If we were to take a look at your own
TBR, what might we find there?
Oh…many books! Haha! Right now, I’m reading A
Girl’s Guide to the Outback by Jessica Kate. I will soon be reading my
friend Natalie Walter’s book, Silent Shadows. A Firm Place to Stand
by Lori Altebaumer. Killer Insight by Virginia Vaughan. Collateral
Damage by Lynette Eason. Plus many more!
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my
questions. Before we go, can you give us an idea on what we can look forward to
next? Any projects you are currently working on that you can share?
Thanks for your questions. I’ve written the next book and my agent
has sent it off. We’ll see what happens! And…one of my plaid shirts may or may
not have made it into this manuscript. ;-)
