Cynthia Herron writes Heartfelt, Homespun Fiction from the beautiful Ozark Mountains. Her Hope Discovered, her début novel and the first in a three-book series, released December 2018 with Mountain Brook Ink.
Hi Cynthia! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers the chance to get to know you and your new book- His Love Revealed a little bit better! I like to start these interviews the same way with something fun to break the ice: can you share 5 random facts about yourself that we will NOT find in your bio?
1. I eat avocados like candy. Well, almost.
2. I’m a huge fan of old movie classics. Singin’ in the Rain is one of my favorites.
3. I’m not a fan of flying.
4. I have a feline fur baby named Miranda.
5. I collect vintage cookbooks.
Let’s talk writing! When did you first realize you had a passion and talent for writing?
I’ve loved writing and making up stories since I was a little girl. In high school I served on the staff for our school paper, and later in college, I dabbled in short stories and poetry. Another career eventually found me for a time. Then marriage. Motherhood. And so on. But my heart always longed to circle back to my first love—the written word. Over the years, I joined local and national writing organizations to further my craft, winning and finaling in various writing contests. Each milestone met was confirmation that I’d ventured down the right path!
You have a degree in psychology and background in social work, how have these experiences impacted your writing?
Working with a variety of people and personalities allowed me to hone in on multiple aspects of human nature. Because of my training and former career, I’m able to write in a realistic vein and get into my characters’ heads in a way that I might not otherwise. I have a better understanding of why people sometimes act and react the way they do, although I may take exception with their life choices. That being said, I’m a huge lover of the underdog, and I’m extremely sensitive to situations that are beyond a person’s control. I cheer wholeheartedly when folks move past heart-wrenching circumstances and break free of expectations and constraints.
This book takes place in the small-town of Ruby. You were likewise raised in a small town. How much of your own hometown or its people are reflected in Ruby?
While His Love Revealed is purely fictional, living in a small town while growing up offered a lot of insight and story fodder for future books. Many of my characters are a mishmash of various people I remember from childhood, complete with eccentricities and lovable qualities that make them uniquely “them.”
Can you tell us a little bit about His Love Revealed?
Sure! His Love Revealed, book #2 in my Welcome to Ruby series, is a friends-to-more story set in the little Ozarks community of Ruby, Missouri, a charming community where “neighbor” is merely another word for friend. Ruby is home to delightful, quirky characters, including Come and Get It proprietress Ida Mae Hoscutt and her right-hand man at the diner, Charles “Chuck” Farrow.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
Hardships, when shared with those who've trudged a similar path, encourage us to press forward in victory. We draw strength from each other as we face life's delays and diversions. When we seek higher ground, it immobilizes our fear and bolsters our resolve. I wrote this book for those whose lives have taken an unplanned detour and for those who’ve faced hurt, made a poor choice, or suffered loss.
This is the second book in the Welcome to Ruby series. Will readers who have not yet read the first book be able to enjoy this story, or will it be necessary to read in order to understand?
Readers will easily enjoy His Love Revealed as a stand-alone novel. To fully appreciate the community’s charm and its array of colorful characters, I’d also recommend reading Her Hope Discovered, book #1 in the Welcome to Ruby series. BTW… Hint: Stay tuned for a special book deal coming soon for HHD!
Thank you again for taking the time to answer these questions. Before you go, are there any other projects you are currently working on that you can share?
Currently, I’m hard at work on Her Faith Restored, book #3 in this series. HFR will re-introduce characters we’ve briefly seen in the first two books, but it will read as a stand-alone novel, as well.
Thank you so much for hosting me!
