Relieve Stress & Get Creative with Custom Paint by Numbers from Winnie's Picks

Let's be honest...2020 has been a stressful year for each and every one of us. I am certainly no exclusion. Even before Covid came along and flipped our lives upside down, it was shaping up to be the worst. 

As such, taking care of our mental health is even more important than ever. What ways have you found to keep yourself  sane amidst the craziness? For many, creative projects have been a relief. That can mean anything from Bible journaling, crafting, gardening or DIY home projects. I personally am among those who finds that creative activities can really help with my anxiety.

So, when Winnie's Picks reached out to me to ask if I'd be interested in trying one of their adult paint by numbers, I thought it would be another fun stress reliever to try out. 

Winnie's Picks has several premade options to choose from, and you're likely to find one that matches your style. Still, the product that REALLY intrigued me was their custom made paint by numbers. 



How does it work?

First, you'll upload your image. For best results, you'll want to choose a high quality image with good lighting and contrast. Make sure your background is free of excess clutter--- a simple brick wall or the like would work well. I personally chose an image with a lot of greenery in the background to try to avoid using too many colors. Speaking of colors, that's one of the next steps--- choose your size and colors. You can choose the standard version which includes 20-24 color paints or the detailed with 32-36 colors. I received the detailed, and would highly recommend going that route if you have an image with multiple people, or a large amount of detail and color variation. You can choose to do a family photo, but remember, the more people there are, the less detailed your painting will be. 

After you've finished placing your order, you will receive you custom pain by number in the mail. It will come in a tube, and contains everything you need:

For my project, I decided to go with a photo of my children. Again, I chose a background that was all green, though the vary shades gave it nice detail. I also dressed both kids in blue with minimal details in hopes of getting the most definition in my painting as possible. As you can see, most of my 36 paints were a variety of blue and green shades.

When I opened my package, two things initially came to mind. First, I was very impressed with the high quality canvas and great packaging. It was in perfect condition, and ready to be painted. My next thought however was a worry that there wouldn't actually be enough paint to complete the project. As you can see, these aren't huge amounts of paint. Again though, the quality of the paint was great, and I found that it not only completely covered my painting, but I had a lot left over for other projects as well. 

If I were to be honest, I was absolutely terrified to get started on this! I have said time and time again that I am no artist, and painting is the medium I am most uncomfortable with. I had never done a paint by number and found myself thinking that perhaps I bit off more than I could chew and should have started with something a little easier. But, it had already been ordered and I was committed. I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to follow. The numbers were directly on the canvas, but it also included a printout of the same image with the numbers as well (just the outline as seen on the canvas). This came in very handy for some of the smaller details that were harder to read. 

You can definitely start with 1 and go in order, but personally, I opted to start with the numbers that covered larger bits of space instead. I this case, that meant my kids faces and bodies. I then worked my way to the smaller details. I found this worked quite well for me. 

It wasn't a quick and easy project, and it certainly didn't come out perfectly by any means, but in the end I absolutely loved how it turned out. All that's left to do is frame it and then I have a perfectly unique piece of art to hand on my walls... and a great conversation piece too.

While I was apprehensive to start, by the end I found myself loving it and knowing that I wanted to do more paint by number projects in the future. This truly is the perfect gift to give as well--- in any form. If you have someone who loves crafty projects, an unfinished project for them to do themselves would be perfect. My mom actually does paint by numbers herself so she would love something like that! On the other hand, if you're wanting to give a unique DIY gift, you can paint yourself and have it framed for your recipient. Either way, a one of a kind gift!
