Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers the chance to get to know you and your new book- Cast The First Stone a little bit better! This book was written collectively as David James Warren by the three of you: Susan May Warren, James L. Rubart, and David Curtis Warren. How did this collaboration come about?
The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone series was a long time coming. Ages ago (probably around 2012) Susie and Jim were on a short plane ride together from Asheville, NC to Atlanta. They started talking about someday writing a book together and their shared loved of time travel stories.
Then in mid 2016 Susie came up with the idea of Rembrandt Stone, called Jim asked, “Are you in?” Jim laughed and gave the only appropriate response: “Are you kidding?”
Susie asked her son David to join the team and in February of 2017 the three gathered at Jim’s home in eastern Washington (after Susie and David battled a Seattle and eastern Washington snowstorm) and brainstormed all six of the stories. So yes, it took a while from conception to release, but it turned out to be the perfect timing!
What does the process of writing a novel together look like?
Every collaboration is different so this is only our story. As just mentioned, we brainstormed the six books over a long weekend and when we say brainstormed the books we mean we outlined—in detail—the entire plot and all the twists and turns for each story.
At that point Susie started writing the manuscripts and David and Jim would weigh in on the various changes that came up during the drafting. Then David and Jim edited the stories and finally, Jim took the finished manuscript into his studio and recorded the audio version.
What does each voice bring to the table?
One of the fun things about this collaboration is the mixing of two voices. It’s like taking a cab and a merlot and blending them. Both Susie and Jim have romance in their other novels, with Susie having a lot and Jim having a splash. So with Rembrandt it’s a little more for Jim and a little less for Susie. Nice blend! Certainly more fantastical elements (time travel) with this series—which are of course a staple of Jim’s stories and not as much with Susie’s. So again, a little less for Jim, a little more for Susie. Plus action, suspense, mystery … there’s a reason Ted Dekker says, “Cast the First Stone is a mind-bender of the first order.”
And what David brings is not only his brilliance in brainstorming plots, but he’s our Time Lord, keeping all the time travel elements logical (as logical as time travel can be!) across all six books. Not easy.
Can you tell us a little bit about Cast the First Stone?
The short version: Rembrandt Stone is a detective who time travels in order to solve cold cases. But it’s of course much more complex than that. Here’s the long version:
One case haunts him. One chance to fix the past. One mistake could cost him everything.
Ex-Minneapolis Police Detective Rembrandt Stone walked away from a career he loved—just the price of being sure he can come home to the wife and daughter he cherishes. But he can’t shake the deep regret over a case left behind.
When his mentor, the former Chief of Homicide dies and leaves Rembrandt with a box of cold cases and a mysterious watch, he finds himself thrust into a world he recognizes—a world from twenty years ago—the same world he’s woken from in a cold sweat a hundred times. But is it a dream, or some kind of twisted reality?
If he solves the case that plagues him, and justice is finally served, will it destroy the life he loves?
Strap in for a mind-bending, time travel thrill ride in Book One of this riveting new series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
First we want them to go on a thrill ride. This series is like a roller coaster. High highs, low lows and a fast pace. But on a deeper level we want them to think about what they regret. What they’d do over if they had a chance and why they’d do it over. It’s something we all wrestle with and Rem is definitely in the struggle of his life over those questions.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer these questions. Before you go, can you share what we can expect next in the series?
Thanks for having us! One of the really fun things about this series is the end of each book (we hope) will make the reader want to pick up the next book SOON. With that in mind the books are coming out every other month till all of them have been released. So No Unturned Stone will come out April 6th. And here’s what you can expect:
“The One Rule Is, Don’t Mess With The Past”
But he did, and now ex-detective Rembrandt Stone is reaping the devastation of ignoring those words when he traveled back in time to solve the one case that had haunted his dreams.
Yes, he solved the crime. Yes, he saved lives. But Rembrandt returns to find the unthinkable has happened and his life has shattered.
There’s only one answer: break the rule again. Go back in time once more, fix what went wrong, save what went right, and yeah, in his spare time solve another brutal crime.
But it’s not so easy to change time, especially when time turns you into a target. And of course there’s the strong possibility if he goes again, he’ll never get back.
Get ready for your mind to be blown in Book 2 of the time-travel suspense series, The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone.
