The Book That Changed My Life

As a child, I dreamed of being a teacher. I loved school, and I loved reading, writing, and learning, which made the idea of teaching a natural career choice. I remember setting up a “classroom” in my house and playing school with my unwilling younger brother. Even though I was a passionate reader and loved writing essays and short stories in class, I never considered becoming an author.

That changed when I was in 5^th or 6^th grade. I saw the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton in the monthly book order flyer and thought it looked interesting. I couldn’t put it down! It immediately became my favorite book, one that I read over and over again.

One day, I read the author biography at the end of the book. I was amazed. S.E. Hinton was only 17 years old when she wrote the book.  I couldn’t believe it. A teenager had written one of the most compelling stories I’d ever read.

Why couldn’t I write a book? I enjoyed writing and telling stories? Although I still wanted to teach, from that moment I wanted to write a book, too. In fact, I decided that I was going write a book before I graduated from high school.

Well, that didn’t happen. I started many stories. In many different genres. YA, science fiction, fantasy, romance, historical romance, regency. took me years to discover what the publishing world referred to as my “voice”. Learning the craft of writing story took a while, too. At times, I set the dream aside to focus on other things such as college and raising a family. It never completely left, though.

Finally, after nearly 33 years, my dream of becoming a published author became a reality when I signed my first contract in 2014. To this day, The Outsiders holds a special place in my heart.
