by David Curtis Warren
Writing a time travel novel presents
some very unique challenges. The biggest is probably that your story and plot
moves in both directions. In most stories things just keep moving forward. Your
character is on their path, and no matter where they end up, there’s always
more they could do. New problems could present themselves. Not so with time
travel. Time travel novels require planning, because the plot moves forward…
but it also moves backwards. If you haven’t taken this into account, and set up
problems in the past for your main character to solve, then the time travel can
easily become a magic bullet, resolving all issues your character is presented
with.
One of the great things about the way
we wrote Rembrandt, is that we were able to plan of all these little details.
Time travel writing is all about the little things. If events don’t make sense,
or aren’t affected by the change, then the whole gimmick feels fake. Because we
wrote all the books ahead of time we were able to iron out these details and really
mesh the time travel into the greater narrative and the world Rem lives in. We
were able to give him problems in the past, and the present, that keep him
reacting. That’s how you create an ever deepening narrative in a time travel
story.
