Home Sweet Deep Haven: Building My Home in Deep Haven

“Deep Haven, MN where the women are all beautiful, the men are all broad shouldered, and everyone is looking for love.”

Or, at least that could be a tagline for the Deep Haven series started years ago by Susan May Warren. Some of the first books I read and loved by Warren were from her Deep Haven series. Like many people, I opened the pages of one of her books and felt like I was meeting up with old friends, loving and learning beside them, and taking a vacation in Deep Haven.

A little over two years ago I learned that Susan May Warren was opening her fictional world to new authors and new ideas. She was inviting us to not just vacation in Deep Haven, but to build a home there. After some encouragement from my real-life knight in shining armor—aka my husband—I applied to be one of the authors to take on this daunting task. Can you imagine my excitement when I was chosen?!

I am now working on my third book set in Deep Haven and I am so thrilled to be here. Writing in someone else’s imagined storyworld is both challenging and fun. On the one hand, I need to be true to the characters and places Warren has created, and on the other, I don’t have to create everything from scratch.

Another bonus benefit has been writing alongside the other two Deep Haven Authors, Rachel D. Russell and Michelle Sass Aleckson. What a delight to create with friends. We’ve spent countless hours working through timeline issues, storyworld ideas, and general story craft together. God blessed us when He put us together!

Building a permanent place in Deep Haven was truly like coming home. I’m excited for you to meet Ella and Adrian in Can’t Buy Me Love, and Jack and Colleen in Hangin’ by a Moment, and all the other people living between the pages. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea!), pull up a chair, and join me in Deep Haven. I’d love to see you there.
