While he waited, his attention turned to a new customer entering the diner, a young Amish woman with rosy cheeks and bright, curious eyes. Something about her caught and held his attention.

As she moved to the counter, her gaze casually scanned the room. When it connected with his, her steps faltered for just a second.

Mike had heard others talk about the instant connection they felt when exchanging glances with someone for the first time, but he’d always scoffed at such notions. Real connections were based on getting to know the other person, not in fleeting looks.
