ABOUT THE AUTHOR
AUTHOR GUEST POST
Writing
as a Ministry
Hello friends! I am so happy to be here with you! My
16th book with Love Inspired Suspense hit the shelves on May 24th.
My husband and I made a special trip to Wal-Mart to see it. It never gets old.
I’m still amazed that I get to share these stories with readers.
I also feel blessed to share my faith.
Let me back up a bit. When I first thought about
writing for publication, I was only about 11 years old. At that time, I was
more interested in the “glamor” of writing than the spiritual aspect of it. Any
authors reading this are no doubt laughing. Writing is not as glamorous as
people believe it is.
Anyway, as I grew older, I became more realistic.
Writing a full book was harder than I’d expected. I never seemed to have time
to write more than a scene or two before I’d become distracted. Plus, unless I went into journalism, there’d
be no money until I sold something. I had no interest in writing non-fiction. I
wanted to write romance, but didn’t appear to have the ability, so I let the
idea go.
Fast forward a few years. In college, God introduced
me to my best friend, Amy. He had a plan. Amy had a strong, vibrant faith. She
was so in love with Jesus. I wanted what she had. For the first time in my
life, I had a relationship with God that went beyond talking to him only when I
wanted something. Amy and I are still friends today. In fact, we married best
friends, and live only a few miles apart in Pennsylvania. Our kids have grown
up together, and we have attended the same church since 1996. God is amazing,
isn’t He?
But His plan didn’t end there. When my oldest child
entered high school, my desire to write returned. But this time, it was
different. I had discovered Christian fiction. This time, I knew I had to write
to please God, and not only myself. Slowly, he changed my desire to write
romance into a desire to touch hearts.
In 2014, I received my first writing contract. I knew
I hadn’t done it by my own merit. He had given me a gift and put me where He
wanted to. And I was so grateful. I also realized He’d given me more than a
career. He’d given me a ministry. Readers would be touched by what I wrote. I
promised I’d never write anything that I wouldn’t show my mother or my
daughter, or that would offend Him. I also realized that writing faith-based
fiction was a delicate art. Readers, myself included, wanted to read about
faith lived organically. I didn’t want to preach to my readers. I wanted to
show in my writing how Christians lived out their faith naturally. I also
wanted to my writing to how God was stronger than any of life’s trials. That
theme is a thread through most of my books.
I’m excited and humbled by His grace. I know His plan
for me may change as life continues. My prayer is to always faithfully follow
His call.
Blessings!
Dana
