Many thanks to Pure Flix for providing a sample of the product for this
review. Opinions are 100% my own.
What do you look for in a good TV show?
I must admit,
I don't watch a ton of TV shows, and if I'm being honest a large part of that
is that I feel like so many shows just aren't ones that for one reason or
another I am not so comfortable putting on the TV where the kids can come in
and see/hear at any time. I find there are many shows that look like the story
itself might be good--- but have an TV-MA rating for language and such. Even
those without that rating often have content that is not kid appropriate, nor
something I prefer in my own entertainment either. I love the idea of shows
that are created for adults, but without all that extra... just good CLEAN
entertainment.
Needless to say, I was pretty happy to hear
about a new show on Pure Flix that is just that: Going Home.
About
the Show:
“Going Home” is a new series that follows an inspiring team of
nurses who help guide patients and loved ones on the ultimate journey – one of
transition from this world to their forever home. It’s a race against time as
the team must help their clients find peace and wrap up loose ends with
compassion and dignity.
Everyone has a calling from God and
Charley’s purpose is to help people transition from this world to their
forever home. Watch this heartfelt series that will inspire you to think
deeper about your relationships and how you can live well with the time we’re
all blessed with. God gives everyone a calling – and for Charley, it’s to help
families during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
Wow!
Sounds pretty powerful, doesn't it? I was given the chance to check out the
third episode to share my thoughts on.
In Episode 3, they
take on a new client Randall, a homeless, addicted Vietnam vet who is
experiencing major PTSD, leading the nurses to wonder if it's the best place
for him. Without giving away too many details, rather than tossing him out, Charley offers him compassion,
learns his story and helps bring him peace. It is a beautiful story that
covered a lot of tough issues like PTSD and the effects of combat not just on
a servicemember but their family, broken father-daughter relationships and
healing, and compassion. All of these topics were handled in a way that I feel
didn't sugarcoat anything, but also offered a lot of hope too. As a military
spouse, I definitely felt like this was a story that needed to be shown, and I
thought they did a very good job on it. It was a show that will certainly
touch on all of the emotions, and probably leave you wanting to keep a box of
tissues nearby when watching.
While I would say that this
might not be the easiest of shows to watch, it really was a great one. It
certainly left me wanting to see more from the series. I like the unique
concept of the show, and felt like the actors did a great job in bringing it to life. (Bonus: the
show features Charisma Carpenter from Buffy and Angel, whom I happen to be a
big fan of personally!)
Perhaps one of my favorite things about the
show was how naturally Charley speaks to God. It wasn't stilted or over the
top scripted (which honestly happens both on the screen and real life), but
really was just a beautiful picture of the prayer life that I think many of us
hope to have... a conversation with a good friend. Beyond just entertaining, this
is a show that will touch your heart and inspire you with it's messages of
family, faith and salvation...and I cannot wait to see more.
If you are dealing with trauma, be it from combat or otherwise, you are not alone. These verses
and additional reading might help bring some comfort:
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in
despair." - 2 Corinthians 4:8 (NIV)
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the
righteous be shaken. – Psalms 55:22 (NIV)
