ABOUT THE BOOK
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Pamela Desmond Wright grew up in a small, dusty Texas town. Like the Amish, Pamela is a fan of the simple life. Her childhood includes memories of the olden days; old-fashioned oil lamps, cooking over an authentic wood-burning stove and making popcorn over a crackling fire at her grandparent’s cabin. She also loves needlepoint and has dozens of projects to work on! Someday, she hopes to move into van life, living on the road as a traveling writer.

The Simple Life: On Favorite Childhood Memories
by Pamela Desmond Wright
When I told
my family I was planning to write Amish romance, they shook their heads in
disbelief. Not only am I not Amish, but I also don’t even live near Amish
country. And though I’ve met a few Mennonites, I’ve never once encountered an
Amish person in real life.
So why am I
fascinated by the Amish?
I must admit
it: I like simple living. Believe it or not, I grew up playing in an authentic
log cabin, complete with a wood-burning stove. Rescued off the prairie, my
grandfather lovingly restored the cabin on his property and furnished it with
many of the things he and my grandmother had saved from her own childhood,
brought across the high plains in a covered wagon from Oklahoma back in the
depression days. These things, outdated by today’s standards, could honestly be
called antiques.
Once the
cabin was restored, it became THE place for all the grandkids to hang out. As
one of the older kids, I loved “playing house” in that cabin and learned to
cook on the stove. It was wonderful playing pioneer and I’d eagerly gather up enough
wood to stoke the belly of that old beast. Lighting a fire, I’d put the kettle
on and brew up a fresh pot of hot, black tea. I’d also get one of grandma’s
cast iron skillets and fry up some apples with sugar and cinnamon or use it to
bake up biscuits that we’d drizzle with butter and honey fresh from one of
grandma’s many beehives.
In many
ways, it was an idyllic way to grow up. Charmed, you might say.
Alas, those
days are gone. My grandparents have passed. The cabin was donated to the local
heritage center in Muleshoe, Texas –where it stands to this day, a reminder of
a simpler, gentler time. One I’d give anything to revisit, just to cook on that
old stove one more time.
