From Idea to Print: On Bringing RJ & York’s Story to Life
by Susan May Warren
“It’s time to get these two married!”
I’ll never forget the day that York stepped onto the page. I
knew that RJ was stuck in Russia and needed to escape and I needed to find a
hero for her. Suddenly, this dashing American, with a hint of a British accent,
raised his hand and stepped into the story. York is the orphaned son of
missionaries to Russia, was a marine, a secret service agent, a CIA operative
and now…on his own, he was the perfect hero to scoop RJ off the dangerous
streets of Moscow and secret her out of the country.
Of course, they had a few troubles along the way. But as
their adventures continued, past that book, into the next, (as subplots), I
knew I needed to give them their full story.
But that wasn’t enough. Because yes, they were together, and
yes, they were headed to Happily Ever After, but they were both spies, of a
sort. And lived dangerous lives, and maybe those lives and a happy ending were
mutually exclusive.
Fans had to know. I had to know.
So, it was time to settle the question, once and for all.
Enter the Epic Story of RJ and York. It started with a simple goal—for York to
propose to RJ, and finally get that firm YES, I will marry you.
But of course, it couldn’t be THAT easy. Because they are
still the people who have to save the world. So, what trouble could they see?
And that’s when I started noodling. I knew I wanted to take
them on a crazy chase through Europe, landing in iconic places my readers might
want to visit—Paris, Italy, Germany—have them experience those places even as
they tracked down a killer, and of course, saved the world and each other.
But…what was the international plot? I just fishing an
extensive nine-book plot (Montana Marshalls/Global Guardians), and am in the
middle of another trilogy plot (Sky King Ranch), and I knew this book would
land in that trilogy. So, I cooked up the perfect snack plot for those waiting
for book #3 in my Sky King Ranch trilogy. I then made a list of all my
characters who could possibly appear in RJ and York’s story.
Then I looked at the theme of the series, and what
adventures I wanted them to have in each book, skills and epic moments. I
wanted RJ to jump from a plane. I wanted York to have an epic fight on a
motorcycle. I wanted a fire (of course) and maybe a jump from a cliff. And I
wanted, at one point, for one of them to believe the other dead. (Because I
love “coming back from the dead” stories!)
Once I did that, I looked ahead to my future series and
found a character to insert into this story, just to give a taste of what’s to
come.
Then, I pulled out my blank plotting sheets, created the
Story Equation for each character, then put together a plotting roadmap for
each story. I had every story plotted before I began.
From there, it was putting the plot into my scrivener,
creating the scenes, and showing up to write them!
I am super thrilled with how the trilogy turned out. Fast
paced, fun, romantic—it’s the perfect getaway to Europe in August. (IMHO).
I hope you enjoy the Epic Story of RJ and York. Will they
get married?
We’ll just have to wait and see!
