A Light in Darkness
by Sara Davison
I don’t think anyone would argue that this planet is a very
dark place. In my debut novel, The Watcher, the narrator describes it
this way: It is
a dark planet, has been since the day the first ones of your kind made the
decision to turn away from the light. I can still feel it, that unfamiliar
prick of pain that shot through me with that first bite of forbidden fruit. I
thought then that the light was gone forever. A shadow fell over the planet in
that moment, like a heavy curtain drawn across the sky. We all felt it, that
pain of separation, of ending, of innocence lost. But we were shown then, and
had it powerfully reinforced for us a few thousand years later, that light is
stronger than darkness.
Although
different books of mine have different themes, two truths are always woven
throughout the pages—that, whatever we are going through we are never alone
because God is always with us, and that the light always overcomes the
darkness. As John Eldredge wrote in his book, Epic, every story that resonates with us on a soul-deep
level reflects the greatest story of all—God’s plan to reconcile humanity to
himself through the life, death, and resurrection of his son. The elements of
that story—someone fallen, broken, and in need of rescue, a hero who saves
them, and the subsequent restoration of relationship—appear in one form or
another in all great stories. If not, even if we are not people of faith,
something about the story doesn’t sit right with us.
My hope
and prayer for all of my books, including my most recent release, Forged, is that readers recognize that
great story in each of my attempts to reflect it through the experiences of my
characters and their relationships with God.
As
believers, we know the ending of that great story. We have full confidence that,
as dark as the planet it, one day it will be filled with light. All will be
restored and put right. As John put it in Revelation 22:3-5 (ESV), “No longer
will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be
in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face and his name
will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light
of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign
forever and ever.”
Still,
knowing how the story will end does not mean there is no uncertainty in the
midst of it. In this fallen, broken planet, we will have trouble, as Jesus
promised. The uncertainty, the fear, and the waiting lend suspense to our lives
here on earth, but we remain grounded and sustained by the most powerful
romance of all—the love between God and those He created to be in relationship
with Him.
As we
live out our lives of suspense and romance, waiting for the glorious day when
we will be in the presence of the one who loves us so deeply, we can find hope
in reading stories that reflect our journey. Stories that remind us that while
yes, we are lost and in need of a saviour, a Saviour has already come and will
come again to bring us to Himself. Stories that reassure us over and over that
we are deeply loved. And stories that reflect the immutable truths that the
darkness that surrounds us is temporary, it has no real power over us, and one
day it will be defeated forever, replaced by a glorious light that will endure
for all eternity.
