Many thanks to Sony Pictures for providing a sample of the product for
this review. Opinions are 100% my own.
"Mommy,” he said. “Are you warm?”
“Yes, baby, I'm warm.”
“Is
Daddy warm?” he asked.
And then the then 7-year-old son asked about
everyone else – the people on the street and in the shelters.
His
mom told him the truth: “No, not everyone is warm.”
These days it seems like we hear a lot about mental illness...
and give it more of the attention that it needs. And boy, do we need it!
Still, as someone who deals with mental illness myself, I so often feel that
much of the conversation surrounding mental illness is a bit sugarcoated.
We're all about talking about mental health when it's more mild... but when it
gets messy, we tend to steer clear.
But the reality is that
mental illness can really be extremely messy and dark, impacting not just the
person with the illness, but those who care about them too. Mental illness can
lead to altered relationships, addiction and other negative coping habits, and
even homelessness.
The new movie 5,000 Blankets shines a much
needed light on these difficult topics. Take a look:
About the
Movie:
Inspired by a remarkable true story, 5000 BLANKETS is filled with hope and
highlights the power of family and faith. When her husband has a mental
breakdown and goes missing, a woman and her young son set out to find him on
the streets, sparking a movement of compassion towards those in need and
inspiring a city.
I was given a chance to check out this movie before it's
theatrical release, and I enjoyed it so very much. Because it does deal with
the weighty topics of mental illness and homelessness, there were certainly
moments where it was difficult to watch... but more than anything it really
was a story filled with hope and the power of serving your community and
making a difference.
Phillip’s Wish is an organization that
was founded by a little boy who saw a need in the world and decided to do
something about it. This movie tells the incredible true story of how that
organization came to be. I absolutely adored this movie. I hope that others
who see it might be inspired to not only think of how they can make changes in
their own community, but also to show a little more compassion and
understanding for those living with mental illness.
