GUEST POST
When Faith
Meets Fantasy
by S.L. Dooley
I often taught
my children using stories, or analogies. I helped them understand the
importance of a clean bedroom or later, the use of discernment when choosing
friend, by telling them a story in which they could relate. Jesus used parables
to teach deeper truths to his disciples and followers. Using words they could
understand and examples that made sense, he revealed deeper truths. In a
similar way, I helped my kids “see” what I was teaching them through story.
My children
are grown and starting families of their own, but I’m still telling stories. In
lands filled with castles and evil kings, giants and magical portals to other
dimensions, I take the reader on a journey.
Stories come
naturally to humankind. We are created in the Author’s image, and as “sub-creators”
and specifically “sub-storytellers” it’s not a stretch to write stories about
the fantastical. Could we even dream up some of these mythical creatures or
magical worlds if we weren’t God’s creation? Our own imagination is launched
into the outer reaches of our understanding. God’s word speaks of talking
donkeys and wall that crumbled at the blast of trumpets. When I write of a
journal that can be used as a weapon, or a tiara worn to help the wearer see
with not just with her eyes, but her heart, God planted the seed of my
imagination long ago.
J.R.R.
Tolkien had a superb view of the fantasy genre: “Fantasy is escapist, and that
is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his
duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're
partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many
people with us as we can!”
Fantasy offers
the reader a little time to unplug from our world and enter someplace magical
and enchanting. To link arms with characters who are charged with slaying
dragons and meeting with elves. But in the end, stories, analogies, parables,
are all mechanisms to achieve one end: to glorify God and point to his Son,
Jesus.
