Excerpt from Jorie’s Journey
As she made her way down the hall, she [Jorie] heard Kendall's voice talking about riding horses at their grandparents' ranch the following afternoon.
"The Quail Covey Ranch is beautiful. It's massive, and there are a lot of interesting places to visit. My grandparents have enough horses and tack for all of us to use," Kendall said.
"It's been quite a while since I've been in the saddle, Kip; but I'd like to go along with you and Lauren," Derek said.
"I'm going to invite my sister to go along with us. It's been a long time since she and I did something fun together."
"I'd love for you to include Jorie in our posse. Your baby sister has captured my attention. She's beyond description in every way—I mean that as a good thing. I'd really like to get to know her better. I just don't know how she feels about me . . ."
"Why don't I invite her to come along and see what she says? She loves riding horses and traipsing across the rolling hills at the ranch. I'll talk to her when she wakes up."
"I'm right here," her heavy voice sounded sluggish to her own ears.
Kendall turned toward her at the sound of her voice and smiled broadly. "Feel better, Kitty?"
"Yes, much, much better." She looked directly at Derek when she continued, "I'm not so cranky now that I've had my nap." She smiled at both men.
"Wow," she heard Derek say under his breath.
"Good. I want to talk to you about something. Sit down, Kitty," her big brother patted the wooden rocking chair next to where he was sitting. After she was settled in, Kendall began talking about a woman he had been dating recently, Lauren Quinn.
"She works in the medical office directly across from my dental practice. Lauren's a physician assistant for the pediatrician there. She's sweet and beautiful; I think you'll like her a lot." Kendall grinned sheepishly realizing he may have revealed too much about his feelings for this woman.
"Why didn't you invite her to have Thanksgiving dinner with us today?" Jorie probed.
"She made plans with her family before we started dating. Since we haven't been seeing each other long enough to get serious yet, we decided to follow through with our original plans."
"That was probably a good idea since everyone here would have you two married off by the end of Thanksgiving dinner if they had their way."
Kendall nodded as Jorie continued. "I'm free all weekend if you want to plan an activity where I can meet Lauren. I gave my entire staff, including myself, all four days off."
"Fantastic. Tomorrow let's go horseback riding with Lauren and Derek at Grandma and Grandpa W's ranch. I'll throw together a picnic lunch, and we can show our guests the meadow up by the creek. You know, at the far eastern side of the ranch."
"I'll go under one condition, Kendall." Her eyes danced with humor.
"What?"
"I'll be the one to throw together a picnic lunch. If I know you, and I believe I do, we'll all be eating PB and J sandwiches and corn chips and drinking cheap soda or red punch out of boxes out on the range if you're in charge of grub."
