Excerpt

When Bailey finally escaped the quagmire of her thoughts, she watched the neighborhood fade away behind them. The dirt road Jackson turned onto appeared to connect with the other side of town.
“Try to relax,” Jackson encouraged. “I haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary.”
At that moment, a massive dark truck idling in a turnoff sped forward and rammed into the back-passenger side of their SUV. Bailey’s body jerked from the impact. Her seat belt pulled her back against the car seat and held her in place like a vise. She dug her fists into her thighs and tried not to scream as they spun around in a circle. When the SUV finally stopped, they faced the edge of the road and a deep plunge.
“He’s backing up to hit us again.” Jackson tried to start the car, but the engine began smoking. “Hold on!”
