About the Author

Pamela Desmond Wright

Pamela Desmond Wright grew up in a small, dusty Texas town. Like the Amish, Pamela is a fan of the simple life. Her childhood includes memories of the olden days; old-fashioned oil lamps, cooking over an authentic wood-burning stove and making popcorn over a crackling fire at her grandparents' cabin. The cabin was later donated to The Muleshoe Heritage Center in Muleshoe Texas where it can be viewed by the public.

On Bringing Amish Stories to Modern Readers

One of the things writers enjoy is hearing from their fans. We work in isolation –sometimes for years -- to bring our stories to life, so it’s always a pleasure to receive a note from those who have invested their time reading our books. For the most part, the notes are complimentary. It is always a great feeling to receive these.

But what about the times when the notes aren’t so …. complimentary?

I don’t like admitting it, but I’ve gotten hate mail. Letters have come in (always anonymously, by the way) listing all the ways I’ve gotten my Amish “facts” wrong. One letter writer even suggested that I stop writing Amish because she/he lived in Amish country and “that isn’t the way the Amish act.”

Wut?

(Cue record scratch sound here.)

I don’t like pointing out the obvious, but a simple Google search will reveal a surprising amount of facts about the Amish. For one, there are several branches of Plain folks throughout the country — and not all of them adhere to the same traditions and style of living. There are Old Order, New Order and those called Beachy Amish. I mainly use “Beachy” Amish in my research, mostly because this branch is more flexible and open to “modern” conveniences, and other customs that fit the stories I am inspired to create.

Instead of telling me “you got it all wrong”, I wish readers would inquire as to my sources and allow me to explain my research and how I adapt it to fit my fictional Amish. That being said, there will always be persons who have a certain POV about a subject and refuse to be swayed no matter what evidence is presented.

When that happens, all a writer can do is shake off the negative remarks and keep on telling their stories they are inspired to write.
