The inspiration behind Detecting Secrets is something very close to my heart. A little over six years ago, my brother and sister-in-law had picked out an English Shepherd puppy, and my brotherplanned to train him for Search and Rescue. But before he could bring the puppy home, my brother passed away unexpectedly. So, my sister-in-law decided to keep the puppy and continue with my brother’s plan. For that reason, I decided to use a SARair-scent dog in honor of him.
Researching Air-Scent dogs was not only interesting but fun since my sister-in-law is now an air-scent dog handler. I basedTheo, the dog in Detecting Secrets on her dog, Bones. The things Bones can sniff out are amazing. We’ve talked about his training and how he does his job. I loved listening to her tell stories about him.
As I started writing, the commands were something I had ask about. I discovered they can vary from team to team. However, there are a few hand signals that are fairly universal. So, when I wrote the scenes with Theo, I used many of my sister-in-law’s commands.
Another little tidbit that was a bit surprising, although I’m not sure why because it makes sense, is that sometimes when out on a search, it can be dangerous. Handlers will many times carry a weapon. My SIL is also careful how she calls Bones back to her side when there is possible danger. In addition, Bones doesn’t wear a lighted collar or anything to call attention to him in the dark so that he doesn’t become a target.
