Looking for your next great movie to see in theaters with the family?
There are plenty of movie options available these days--- from fun to adventurous and everything in between...but with Easter approaching, why not see a movie that celebrates faith?
Angel Studios- the studio that brought us The Chosen, is releasing a brand new film His Only Son. It is the first time in a feature film that the controversial account of Abraham and Isaac has been brought to life and is one that will inspire all who watch. Check it out:
Synopsis: His Only Son recounts one of the most controversial moments in the Old Testament—when Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac on the mountain of Moriah. While traveling to the place of the sacrifice, alongside Isaac and two servants, Abraham is flooded with vivid memories from the years he and Sarah spent longing for the son they were promised—the son he must now lay upon the altar.
I was given the chance to check out the film before its theatrical release and share my thoughts.
Now, if I'm being honest--- this isn't a film that I would typically pick out for entertainment purposes. I don't tend to prefer Biblical or even historical movies... but I think they are also important stories to be told. While watching a movie about a Biblical story certainly can never replace reading the Bible, it can help bring those stories to life in a new way that perhaps we can understand better. Not to mention, some people really are more visual and benefit from seeing it played out.
So, while this might not be my typical movie choice, I truly was excited to check it out for myself. The verdict? This movie was wonderfully done! It's a lower-budget film than most, and while sometimes that can seem pretty obvious, I didn't feel like that was the case here. It was not lacking in quality or talent in any way, in my opinion. Instead, it beautifully told this oftentimes controversial story of trusting in God: Trusting Him in the waiting. Trusting Him in His plans. Trusting Him in all His promises.
The movie follows Abraham and Isaac on their journey to the mountain of Moriah, but also flashes back to moments of Abraham's life with Sarah, and the struggles of faith along the way. These memories weaved together beautifully in this film. Knowing the story of Abraham, I certainly appreciated seeing the story brought to life, but I also think it was done so in a way that even those who aren't familiar with the story will walk away with a good understanding of that story too, and ultimately how it ties back to the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross as well.
