Book Excerpt

There was no place on earth she’d rather be.

Checking the time on her phone, Janine reluctantly turned from the view. She and her Hope Island Securities teammate Eli Warren were meeting with a potential client in a little less than an hour. The case was going to be an interesting one. Their prospective client owned a large international investment firm, and he believed his business was part of a cybersecurity attack.

Janine scraped back strands of her dark red hair escaping from its ponytail. “Ready to head home?” Bailey woofed knowing it meant a stop for his favorite treat and some water.

She pulled in a couple of breaths, punched play on the music, and ran. After covering only a small space, the music faded and her phone rang. Janine pulled it from her pocket and stopped when she saw the name on the screen. Her former director, Sam Lucas. Janine frowned. She couldn’t imagine why Sam was calling unless he and his longtime girlfriend, Hillary, were getting married. Hillary was Janine’s former partner. The two women talked frequently, but Hillary hadn’t mentioned her and Sam’s relationship had become serious enough for marriage.

She swiped to answer the call. “Sam? This is a surprise.” To keep her muscles from tightening, Janine kept walking. Bailey eagerly fell into step.

About the Author

Mary Alford grew up in a small Texas town famous for, well not much of anything really. Being the baby of the family and quite a bit younger than her two brothers and her sister, Mary had plenty of time to entertain herself. Making up stories seemed to come naturally to her.

As a preteen, Mary discovered Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew instinctively that was what she wanted to do with her over-active imagination.

She wrote her first novel as a teen, (it’s tucked away somewhere never to see the light of day), but never really pursued her writing career seriously until a few years later, when she wrote her first inspirational romantic suspense and was hooked.

Today, Mary lives in Texas with her husband and loves to create characters who face dangerous situations with faith on their side.

Mary is very active online and would love to connect with readers on Facebook, Twitter, or any of the social media platforms listed at maryalford.net.
