“I don’t know how much kicking I can do in this straight skirt,” Alli said, “but I’ll give it a go.”

Jake slipped an arm around her waist, and she did the same with him as the bride and groom came alongside them to form a quartet. Arm in arm in a line, they moved forward and back, kicking, scootin’ and having a ball. Then the song morphed into Brooks and Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and Jake pulled her into his arms for some two-steppin’.

She lifted a brow. “You do realize I’m wearing heels.”

A smile tugged at his lips. His hold tightened as he looked into her eyes. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you, Alli. I won’t let you fall.”

An awareness that hadn’t been there before sifted through her. Something terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Because in that moment, she saw Jake for the man he’d become instead of the boy she still thought him to be. And that spelled danger with a capital D.
