Behind the Scenes Look at Falling for the Cowboy DocThe Sloan family was introduced in The Texas SEAL’s Surprise, Book One in my Three Springs, Texas series. Carter Sloan and his brothers started as secondary characters. However, when I wrote the scene that features the Sloan brothers, they completely captured my attention – I was laughing out loud as each brother came into the scene and seemed to take over the story. And I knew immediately I wanted to write the Sloan brothers’ stories. The Sloan family was one I wanted to get to know better – one I wanted to spend time with myself. And that for me is important as a writer – I like to write about characters that I would want to call friends. Characters I would want to live next door to. And characters that I would want to call family.
I come from a very close family. I have three older brothers myself as well as a large extended family that includes my relatives and those I’ve been fortunate enough to choose as my family. I like to write about family – the complicated parts and the fun parts as family is really important to me. And the same could be said about love as well – I like to write about the complicated and messy parts of falling in love. Love isn’t always perfect and doesn’t always go as planned, but there can be so much reward in that journey. And I believe that love and family are worth fighting for. That’s really my inspiration for writing romance. In the midst of an imperfect world, there can still be moments where everything is right. And those are the moments worth holding onto.
As for the Sloan brothers, love isn’t part of their plans. But love finds each one of them when they least expect it. With their family’s help (and sometimes interference), the brothers discover the lives they’ve planned might not be the lives they need. Welcome to Three Springs, Texas where the tumbleweed is large, roots run deep, and family is the heart of everything.
