When she stopped in the doorway, he mustn’t have heard her footsteps, for he stood, staring out the window where the whole scene had unfolded.

Even with his back turned, he was handsome, his squared shoulders set off by his tan vest, his white shirt starched and crisp, and his long curls over his collar. Even the way he stood gave her a sudden chill, with his left arm extended over his head, resting on the window frame, staring as though he was trying to see, to experience what she had just over an hour before.

“Thomas.” Her voice emerged soft but steady.

He spun and faced her.

He looked scared. Sad.

Why?

She walked toward him, and he met her, arms outstretched, then gathered her in a tight embrace. He buried his face in her loose tendrils, his breath warm against her cheek. “Forgive me.”

Forgive me?
