About the Movie: Caro Drake, a brilliant but emotionally guarded American student, arrives at the University of Oxford with the goal of attaining her PhD. Through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love.
Surprised by Oxford is based on the award-winning memoir of the same name. To be honest, I don't really read many memoirs and had never heard of this one prior to having the chance to screen and review this movie, so I really wasn't sure what to expect... but I was pretty quickly drawn into this beautifully told story.
While this story has a journey toward faith, I must admit that it wasn't the squeaky-clean Christian film that I had initially expected. I was quite surprised when less than 15 minutes (I think) into the movie, she called someone a 'donkey'... but with a bit more colorful language. I was not bothered by it, just surprised. While there were a few other instances of language as well as talk of sex (nothing graphic) and some drinking too, it was all VERY minor and, in some ways, made the story feel more genuine to what many college students experience. To be clear, at the start of this story, Caro is agnostic... so her experiences reflected that well I thought... keeping it genuine, while still appropriate. I enjoyed seeing her journey as the story progressed and thought it was told beautifully. While it might not be a pick for your next family movie night (unless you have older teens), it does have a great message and was one that I really enjoyed.
