On Writing Christmas Love Stories
Falling in love is universal, but finding romance at Christmas is magical. There are about 300 Hallmark Christmas movies to date, and the popularity is no accident. Everyone wants to find love, and almost everyone loves Christmas. What could be more joyful than falling in love as the first snowfall flutters around you, or winter stars shine down from above on a sleigh ride?
I was blessed to have my sweet and inspirational romances picked up by Harlequin’s Love Inspired line in 2018. I always dreamed of telling exciting historical adventures or uplifting contemporary romances, and doing it in a way that would make my family and friends proud. I wanted to write stories that could be shared with a bestie, daughter or even Grandma. Love Inspired is the perfect publisher. Christmas makes the perfect backdrop. It’s that moment of the year we slow down, reevaluate, and remember what things are most important to us. The holidays are a great time for building strong, lasting relationships as we look outward instead of inward; give rather than receive.
One of my favorite scenes in my new book, The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma, is when hero, Ben Cooper, realizes the greatest gift he can give his daughter is a family—and that means sacrificing what he thought was important to win the woman he loves. Sometimes we have to give up what we think we love to have what matters most, and that is the most romantic gesture of all no matter what season it may be.
The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma is my fourth book with Love Inspired. It’s inspired by the deep friendships we have in our youth that sometimes develop into romance later when we least expect it. Growing at any age, means recognizing our faults and working on them, and that’s so much easier to do with someone at our side. We need relationships that encourage us and cheer us on, whether it’s family or friends. I hope I caught the essence of those vital support systems in this Christmas story about coming home and second chances, and I hope you enjoy the read.
Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas!
