Before me stood a towering Elizabethan monstrosity of mullioned windows and severe pointed arches. The equally ancient door opened on wide, creaking hinges. I imagined the place appeared much more desirable in the daylight. Truly, this was no cozy Glen Park. I glanced up at a third-story window—a form hovered behind the wavy glass, then moved away. Watching me?
I was ushered swiftly into a small foyer where a clutch of yew and rosemary hung beribboned on the newel post. The housekeeper brushed past, its pungent scent trailing after her. She led me down a winding passage of narrow halls that connected with another landing to the main staircase—a much wider set of stairs like a great swallowing mouth from the shadowed hall.
