The inspiration behind Relying on the Enemy is multifold.
First, I wanted to show the plight of a mother during one of the most desperate times in history: a winter during the Great Depression. Marian’s attempt to garner employment at the beginning of the story was a common struggle for women, especially married women, during the Depression.
During WWI, women were allowed jobs previously denied them because the men were fighting the war. However, when the men returned and jobs disappeared, women were often the first to be pushed out in the belief that they were stealing jobs from the men.
Sadly, much of the progress made due to the women’s rights movement of the early 1900s and the passing of the 19th Amendment was undone during the Depression. Until war again opened non-traditional roles to women on the home-front.
This is why I included Agatha Christie’s quote at the beginning of the book: “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”
Secondly, in this marriage of convenience story, where Marian is forced to rely on the son of the man who ruined her family, I needed a hero who readers could instantly love. Who better to model Gil after than one of my favorite classic heroes: Gilbert Blythe. It was great fun to include quotes from Anne of Green Gables, easily done because Marian’s girls love the story, too.
Lastly, I always love to include real-life historical events in my stories, if at all possible. In Relying on the Enemy, the event occurred on January 18, 1931, the first big snowfall of the year. According to local newspapers at the time, it was a twenty-four-hour snowfall dropping six inches of blinding snow followed by cold weather.
Relying on the Enemy is a story of winter, desperation, and the hope that comes from trusting God even when life is hard. I hope you’ll enjoy it!
