The Story Behind the Story  

An Unlikely Arrangement has been swimming around in my head for a few years. The magnificence of such a home located in the mountains of North Carolina has always fascinated me. I found the best way to do research for this book was to visit and to see it for myself. But before our first visit, I talked my husband into watching Downton Abbey, thinking that would make it more interesting to see such a place and I was right. Even though Downton was filmed in an entirely different location, watching the show gave abundant insight into how stately homes were operated. And, yes, my husband enjoyed watching the show, minus a few scenes that we intentionally skipped.  

On our first visit we took a regular tour of the house, and I took at least a hundred photos. Still, there’s just too much to see in one visit.  

So, we made reservations the following spring to revisit. But this time, we took a “Guests of the Biltmore Tour.” We were the only two that showed up, so we had the tour guides all to ourselves, and I was able to ask more questions.  

Before the tour started, we chose a guest from a list of actual visitors and I chose Alice Roosevelt, the president’s daughter. I had so much fun bringing my fictional character, Abigail Dupree, and Alice Roosevelt together for a brief interaction in one scene.  

I saw as we were leaving that there were still slots available for the backstairs tour, so I talked my husband into doing one more.  

He actually enjoyed this expedition more. But I enjoyed it just as much. I soaked in as much information as I could for the next book in the series, which will be from a servant’s POV.  

Both of my previous visits were in the spring and summer, but I am planning another visit in November to see the awe of such a place decorated for Christmas.
