REBEL: A Rebel does not follow the crowd. (Romans 12:2)
A few years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to review a debut album by Anne Wilson, featuring her hit song 'My Jesus'. Immediately, I fell in love with her style. It had that country sound that I absolutely adored, but with beautiful messages of faith. Anne Wilson is now a PLATINUM-certified, GRAMMY-nominated artist and songwriter. Her second album has just released, and I was once again given the chance to listen and share my thoughts.
REBEL released on April 19 and the “trailblazing album” (People.com) secured No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots on Christian, Country and all-genre charts respectively. It includes collaborations with some of Christian and Country music's biggest names, such as CMA Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson for “Praying Woman,” GRAMMY-Award winner Chris Tomlin for “The Cross” and Country superstar Jordan Davis for “Country Gold.”
I am absolutely blown away. I absolutely adored the first album... but this one is next level! As Grammy.com says, "The 16-song project hits the bullseye between contemporary Christian and Country twang”. I couldn't have said it better myself. Listening to it, the music itself is wonderful... I love her sound and couldn't find a bad one on the album! When you listen to the lyrics though? Oh my goodness, so beautiful. I loved them all.
Like I said, there's not a bad song on this album, but there were a few that stood out to me. Up first, God & Country. For those of us who were raised in the church and on country music, this one certainly hits home. I loved the nods to some country favorites. Definitely a new favorite for me.
Rain in the Rearview also won my heart, in part because of this verse:
I got ten and two on a two tone
Two lanes of freedom
Singing “Jesus take the wheel”
Now I know what she was feelin’
Cause I feel it too
Fun fact, I used to sing at my church as a teenager and one of the songs we sang most often was Jesus, Take the Wheel. As such, that song has always had a special place in my heart. While I have always loved it, in recent years, as life's tougher moments have caught up with me, I found myself thinking these exact thoughts... that song means so much more NOW knowing those feelings. As such, I loved that nod... but also in general, it was just a beautiful song with a beautiful message.
If you're like me and love country music, but also want music that will uplift and encourage, this album is a must listen to. Check out more about Anne and the album below:
Bio: One of Nashville's most inspiring young trailblazers, Anne Wilson is a revolution in modern music. The Lexington, Ky. native, known for her transcendent vocal and down-to-earth storytelling, recently released REBEL, fusing the heart of Contemporary Christian Music with the sound of Country. A bold musical statement with an even bolder message of faith, REBEL features her hopeful, healing debut Country single “Rain In The Rearview” as well as chart-topping Christian radio ballad “Strong.” The genre-bending album follows her GRAMMY-nominated 2022 debut My Jesus, with the title track becoming a PLATINUM-certified No. 1 hit on Billboard's Christian Airplay chart. Since then, Wilson has tallied over 900M global streams, made her Grand Ole Opry debut and wrapped her entirely sold-out headlining My Jesus Tour. Already named a Spotify Hot Country Artist to Watch, one of CMT's Next Women of Country and a 2024 Opry NextStage Artist, she has made high-profile appearances on TODAY and ACM Honors, while earning her first-ever CMT Music Awards nomination, as well as a Billboard Music Award. Unapologetically real, Wilson approaches her craft with a purpose and conviction that sets her apart, declaring, “I am who I am — I'm Anne Wilson. I love God and that's my everything, but I love Country music, too, and I can have a beautiful mix of both.”
