A mysterious stranger holds the key to the fate of the nation.

When she stumbles upon a man lying unconscious on a forest trail, she quickly realizes he is unlike any patient she has ever encountered. With no memory of his past, his only clues to his identity are his first name—August—and the certainty that he is a Patriot. Against her better judgment, Nessa grows closer to August, trusting him with secrets that could cost her dearly. But when she discovers a deadly plot that could change the course of the war, Nessa must question everything she thought she knew about August and his true allegiances.

About the Author
A lifelong resident of the American South, Kit Hawthorne makes her home on a Texas farm that has been in her husband’s family for seven generations. She spent many years singing, composing, and playing Irish pennywhistle in a Celtic folk band. All those ballads and boat songs awakened in her a love for a Scottish heritage that spans both sides of the Atlantic. She’s an avid reader, especially of history, biography, mystery, theology, and romance, and enjoys logging her reads (and plotting her life) in her Bullet Journal. She also enjoys drawing, sewing, quilting, knitting, and restoring old furniture to beauty and usefulness.

Author Interview
Welcome, Kit! Thank you
for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to
get to know you and your new book Treason Trail.
Can you share 5 random facts about yourself?
1. 1. I
grew up in the Rio Grande Valley. It’s in the tip of Texas, close to South
Padre Island and the border of Mexico.
2.
I
used to play and sing in a Celtic folk band.
3.
While
traveling in Russia, I was frequently mistaken for a Russian by other Russians.
This did not happen to the other Americans in my group. Generally the Russians
could spot an American from a mile away.
4.
I
have seen The Incredibles more times than I can count and it always
moves me to tears.
5.
I
love labels. I keep ten or so different kinds on hand in case anything needs to
be labeled—jar lids, shelf edges, containers, electric cords.
When did you first discover you had a passion/talent for writing?
When
I was nine years old, I mentioned to a PE teacher/retired pastor that I would
love to write books but figured you probably had to be rich to publish them. He
informed me that being a writer was a legitimate job that people got paid for.
I never looked back.
What advice would you give to other aspiring writers?
Study
the craft. Read with a professional eye, noting what works and why. Write a
lot. Find a good critique group and don’t take criticism personally. Just
accept it as part of the process and learn to profit from it.
What was the inspiration behind this story?
I had already written the first two
books in the series and knew I wanted to write Nessa’s story next. By this
point in the Revolutionary War, all the major battles had been fought, and a
Patriot victory seemed like a sure thing. I was interested in ways the Patriots
could still have lost the war, and the most intriguing option was treason. I’ve
always been fascinated by memory loss, and the idea of an amnesiac man of
military age turning up in a Patriot camp with no way to account for himself
made for a good hook—especially with romance thrown into the mix.
If you could describe your main character(s) in just three words each, what
would those words be?
Nessa:
empathetic, idealistic, responsible
August:
rational, inventive, faithful
This is book three in the Cape Fear Legacy series. Will readers who have not
yet read those previous books be able to enjoy this as a standalone?
Oh,
yes. Each book covers a distinct stage of the war, and a different love story.
What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?
Finding
the right balance of accurate historical information with a fresh, compelling
love story. Research is vital to good historical fiction, but it can be a form
of procrastination, and too much detail can get in the way of the story.
The most rewarding?
Seeing
Nessa’s and August’s characters unfold as they worked together to solve a
mystery—and fell in love.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
A new appreciation for the hardships Patriots faced late in the Revolutionary
War, and for their determination to stand by their principles and defend their
God-given rights. These were real men and women whose lives were disrupted by
eight years of war on home soil. They never could have won without God’s
providential care and guidance, and they knew it.
