Who was this street urchin to the American horse trainer? How had the lad commanded such loyalty of her? 

“The boy took something of mine,” Bret explained to the matron of the town square. 

Babka waved a hand. “Harmless, harmless. All little boys go through rebellious times.” 

“It’s a dangerous world,” Bret countered. “He could pick the wrong pocket and face far more severe consequences.” 

Adia crossed her arms, angled her head. “Would you have the boy flogged, Mr. Conway?” Her voice deepened as if she were digging a trench and burrowing in for a fight. “Sent to prison? His hand cut off?” 

“I’d settle for far less.” He grinned. 

She drew back as if sensing a trap. 

“And what is that?” She crossed her arms. 

“Dinner. With me.”

Nicole M. Miller lives in Washington State with her husband and two sons, along with her Arabian horses, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. As a longtime horse owner, she's been involved in many horse organizations, including serving on the Clark County Fair Court and as Miss Teen Rodeo Washington. She's received national and regional awards for her nonfiction from American Horse Publications and the Society of Professional Journalists.
