About the Author

Felicia Ferguson achieved master’s degrees in Healthcare Administration and Speech-Language Pathology, but has written since childhood and dreamed of authoring books that teach and inspire others. An award-winning fiction and non-fiction freelance writer, she has previously published devotions with Christian Devotions and Inkspirations, written articles for national luxury lifestyle magazine, VIE, and guest blogged on multiple websites. But her greatest writing love is contemporary Southern women’s fiction and romantic suspense. Felicia Ferguson on Combining Faith and Fiction

As much as I can’t not write, I also can’t separate my faith from my writing. There is always a thread of faith woven into every piece I write, whether secular or faith-based. In my novels, I always want to see characters grow in their faith walk and heal their pasts using biblical principles. So regardless if they are women’s fiction or romantic suspense, all of my stories are character-driven. And those characters (the women in particular) work through their baggage to heal or start healing their emotional wounds as well as deepen their relationship with God.

Sometimes the character will talk with a therapist as part of their process. Other times, they will talk with a trusted advisor or confidante. But in every case, they will all have a much needed “Come to Jesus” meeting—literally—where they wrestle with God, bringing him their questions, broken dreams, and/or wounded hearts, and achieve their true, hope-filled happily-ever-after.

I feel that fiction writing is a great way to showcase spiritual growth and the healing process, and I would love to read more stories that incorporate either or both. There are people who will never pick up a self-help book on a subject, but they will read a great story. And by being in the character’s head, reading via the deep point of view that is the popular writing style now, readers can experience the hard work it takes to confront wounds and take the steps toward healing and spiritual maturity.

And, once the story is finished, readers can then celebrate and appreciate the character moving into or at least toward a life of freedom, hope, and a deeper relationship with God. If the reader is inspired to do their own hard work toward healing their own hurts, or have a better understanding of people in their lives who are dealing with the issues they’re facing, that’s an even bigger pay-off for me. And them.
