In an idyllic village nestled in the English countryside, photographer Georgia Brooks is desperate to begin a new chapter in her life. Bramble Cottage was supposed to give her space to heal and hope again after suffering betrayal and rejection by the only man she ever loved. This was Georgia’s chance to rekindle her faith and reconnect with her sisters in a place that held sweet childhood memories—not expose herself to the ugly underbelly of the art world and put her family in danger.

Local pediatric surgeon, Doctor William Hughes, is captivated by the Canadian beauty with a camera over one shoulder and the weight of the world on the other. After suffering his own tragic loss and balancing a demanding career with raising a toddler, he recognizes the heaviness of grief . . . and the burden of guilt.

When Georgia discovers she could be in possession of incriminating evidence to frame a criminal ring, she needs to trust someone. She chooses Will. Postcards, photographs, paintings—something about Bramble Cottage is worth killing for. Can Georgia uncover the truth in time?

Author Interview

Welcome, Laura! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Captured in Frame.

It’s my absolute pleasure—thank you for the opportunity to be here!

Can you share 5 random facts about yourself?

Well… I’m a chocoholic, I started dating my husband when I was 14 years old, I’m English and Canadian, I’m 5’2” on a good day, and my French bulldog Lulu is named after my favorite author, Louisa May Alcott.

When did you first discover a passion for writing?

I desperately wanted to be an author when I was a little girl with an obsession for books—but then kept my writing dream a secret for a whopping 25 years, until my husband finally dug really deep and unearthed it! As soon as I heeded his encouragement and made the decision to begin my writing journey, the passion was ignited and I knew it was what I was supposed to do.

What drew you to romantic suspense?

Great question—because I originally wanted to be a picture book author! After a few years, I’d written in several genres and had books for younger audiences published, but always enjoyed reading Christian romantic suspense. The melding of a love story with nail-biting action and a message of hope threaded through the pages… I wondered what it would be like to challenge myself and actually write one. A trip to Jamaica, a fear of drowning, and an ominous glass bottom boat gave me my story idea, which eventually became the first of my six (so far) romantic suspense books published!

As a suspense writer, what is the most incriminating search we’d find in your search history?

Haha! Probably researching the best place to shoot someone without killing them. Or how long a person can breathe for in the trunk of a vehicle. Or the fastest ways to induce unconsciousness…

In addition to being an author, you are also a writing coach. What advice would you offer to an aspiring writer?

One piece of advice would be not to put yourself into a box as a writer. We all start with specific goals and that’s absolutely fine, but be open to exploring some different paths along the way. As I mentioned before, I saw my writing life going in a certain direction with me as the next Beatrix Potter(!), but God had other ideas. Thankfully, once I realized I was a writer—not just for one specific genre with one specific endgame in mind—but a writer of words, then I allowed my work to take shape in a variety of formats. I would encourage an aspiring writer to step through doors that open, even if they are shaped differently than you had originally envisioned. Think outside the box. Try different writing styles. Read an assortment of genres. Above all—keep writing.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life?

As an eternal optimist and glass-half-full girl, I find it challenging to balance the dark side of whatever issues and experiences my protagonist encounters, with the light-filled hope of a faith-based book. Yet it’s essential to have that push-pull tension present throughout to create a truly compelling read. I wanted to go back to my roots and set a story in the quaint English countryside—but it needed some gripping suspense without being unrealistic. Romantic suspense readers love a surprise and you can give them all the drama, but it needs to be believable!

The most rewarding?

For Captured in Frame, my inspirational came from a visit to the most charming English countryside village where it seemed almost too delightful and dreamy to be true… until I envisioned a huge, grizzly man in such vivid detail that I immediately had that darkness-and-light playing out for my poor, unassuming protagonist. After that, the story came to life and I was there for the ride! I love it when that happens.

If you could describe your main character(s) in just three words each, what would those words be?

Photographer Georgia Brooks is brave, creative, and a perfectionist.

Doctor Will Hughes is introverted, perceptive, and dreamy!

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

In Captured in Frame, the overarching theme is one of forgiveness and the beauty of second chances, so my desire would be for the reader to take away this truth: with God, there is always hope and you are always loved.
