Balancing crime and romance in a story isn’t easy. At least doing it well isn’t. In Hunted by a Killer, Charlotte and Austin are hunting a serial killer. Not very romantic, right? Since the story is a romantic suspense, I had to find a way to blend falling in love with catching the bad guy in a realistic way. I started by giving Charlotte and Austin a backstory. They’d worked together before on the Presque Killer case. Then Charlotte’s sister became a victim, and any attraction between Charlotte and Austin had withered under guilt and grief. When FBI Special Agent Austin Walsh arrives back in Presque to assist in the hunt, he wants keep his relationship with Charlotte strictly professional. Love has other plans. 

While working to solve a crime, the investigators need time away from the case. An author can use those mental and physical pauses to grow the love story. People need to eat, drink, and rest. Meaningful conversations can occur over a shared meal.  

You can also learn a lot about another person while working closely together toward a shared goal. Especially under the pressure of a murder investigation. In Hunted by a Killer, Charlotte learns that Austin is neat and tidy to the extreme. He keeps his work materials organized. Unlike Charlotte, who has her own haphazard method of keeping track of her paperwork. Their styles play well off one another, and they create a solid team. Charlotte is more emotional during the investigation. Understandable given her dear sister was one of the Presque Killer’s victims. Austin takes a more logical approach to finding the killer. Again, they balance each other. Austin helps comfort Charlotte when emotions grow too distracting. And Charlotte reminds Austin of the human stakes of their chase to stop a killer. 

Together the hero and heroine of a story can achieve their goals while overcoming the obstacles to love. Once the bad guy is in jail, the couple has earned their happy ever after.
