Mom Ball by Kaci Lane: Book Review

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

The Book

The last person I expected to see in the cow pasture was the father of my child . . .

Especially since I'm wearing a bathrobe and flip-flops with spa cream smeared on my face.

How ironic that the first time my son shows interest in baseball, his Major League dad shows up. Now it will be harder than ever to keep my secret about “Nate the Great.”

The complications continue when I discover Nate bought the abandoned mansion within spitting distance from my family’s apple orchard. Then he agrees to help my son with baseball.

When things couldn’t get any more stressful, my friend Morgan tricks me into helping her coach our kids’ Little League team.

We all know Nate would be the perfect guy to help. But the more I’m around him, the closer I come to spilling my secret.
I never told him about Timothy for fear it would ruin his career.

If I confess everything, will we become a real family? Or will he hate me for keeping Timothy from him and leave town for good?

This sweet-heat-level small town, romantic comedy is the second in a new series set in the fictitious Apple Cart County, Alabama. Hart of Dixie meets Sweet Magnolias as friends navigate raising kids among busy lives and nosy neighbors.

The Author

Kaci Lane is an Alabama girl whose mission in life is to write stories that relate to real-life issues with a bit of comic relief. While unsuccessfully trying to learn Spanish for a decade, she has become fluent in Sarcasm, Southern Belle and movie quotes. She is married to a true Southern gentleman and has two young children, all of which help keep her humility in check.

With a background and degree in journalism, Kaci has written almost everything about anything. Well, except for topics that would make any good Southern Baptist’s face turn the color of a Crimson Tide football jersey.

Book Review

Mom Ball is the second book in the Single Southern Mamas series. I had not personally read the first book yet, but found this one read just fine as a standalone.

I first fell in love with Brooke and Nate's romance in Brewin' Up Love, which was a prequel to this one and part of the Coffee Loft series. In that book, they were high school sweethearts preparing to head off to college and their future careers... and then when I read the preview of this one and realize that she had their baby, and he has no idea...  well, I couldn't help but wonder what could have happened between then and now that they didn't get their HEA right then. If you haven't read Brewin' Up Love, I'd definitely recommend it because it will have you rooting for them all that much more to see where they started--- but you can definitely enjoy this one without having read it too. It definitely had me very much looking forward to finally getting some answers in this one. Admittedly, the secret baby trope is not one that I usually gravitate toward, but it was done very well in this one and I found myself sympathizing with Brooke and the decisions she felt she needed to make... though it certainly broke my heart for all involved at times. Mixed in with that sweet romance is Kaci's unique brand of humor that is truly unlike any others that I've read. She always gives us such a unique cast of characters that are in some ways a little over the top... but at the same time also super relatable (or at least for us that grew up in the country anyway!). I couldn't help but laugh out loud throughout the story and love every minute of it.

Mom Ball is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language. While not Christian fiction, the characters do attend church, pray, etc.
