In my bio, I mention that I believe in the power of love simply because I grew up surrounded by true love. I was blessed to experience my grandparents’ marriage of seventy years and just this past weekend, my parents celebrated sixty-one years of marriage. I just read that only about 2% of married couples are able to celebrate sixty years together. Talk about a milestone and lasting legacy for our family. And apparently sixty-one years is the plane tree anniversary which represents resilience and endurance, which are two things I believe are very much needed in any long-term relationship.
From watching my grandparents and parents, I learned that love isn’t just something that happens. Love is something you choose. Love is a choice. And it is a choice you make every single day, even on the difficult ones. That’s where the resilience and the endurance and the courage and so many other things come into play. Because let’s be clear – none of us are perfect and neither is love.
But I believe therein lies the magic. The power of love is someone standing beside you and loving you even when you’re at your worst and still being there with you when you both come out stronger on the other side. Love for me is not just about showing up when it’s easy and fun. It is also being there for your partner when it’s hard and maybe when things feel more like a grind than a joy ride.
It is all those moments – the ups and downs and the in betweens (both big and small) that inspire me as a romance author. Those characters with flaws and imperfections who still find the courage to fight for love are the ones I like to write about. Of course, they don’t always start out fighting for love or even wanting it in their lives for that matter. And for me that’s the journey that fascinates me the most because a love for the ages isn’t just meant for fairytales. After all, everyone deserves their own love story. Don’t be afraid to write your own.
