More from Karen

Did you know the cherubim that guard the Garden of Eden have four faces – that of an ox, human, lion, and eagle? You’ll find their description in Ezekiel 10:14, and it’s quite different from most angels you’ll see in traditional children’s books. But you will see them beautifully illustrated in this second installment in the Questions for Kids picture book series, all about the First Family in the Garden of Eden.

You see, my mission from the very beginning has been to present accurate biblical accounts to young readers that are foundational to increasing their understanding of the Bible and growing a solid faith in God.  Kids are bombarded with so many counterfeit messages these days that contradict the Bible, and it’s leaving them confused and hopeless. Is truth relative? Absolutely not! The real Truth lies in God’s Word, and I am grateful to play a part in counteracting the lies of our culture by presenting Truths straight from the Bible, in a fun and dynamic way.

In this book (and book series), you won’t find a regurgitation of Bible facts (that never worked for me as a child). Rather, you’ll find a young girl with many questions about God and life, much like our own children and grandchildren. And you’ll find her loving grandpa who is happy to answer those questions by pointing her to the Word of God. Their adventures into unique periods in Bible history, driven by some serious 7-year old questions, will help pull young readers into the narrative and connect the Bible to their world. It’ll also open doors to faith-building conversations with parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers.

The hardest part of writing these books? Keeping it short enough to fit into the picture book category ;).

I pray you and your young reader will be blessed as you journey with Lucy and her Papa Joe into the Bible to discover God’s power, His faithfulness, and His never-ending love.

Author Interview

Can you tell us a little bit about what readers can expect from your books?

Readers can expect to take an exciting, colorful journey into the Bible right alongside the main characters, curious young Lucy and her trusted advisor Papa Joe. These Bible adventures will introduce important true to life characters and real life Bible accounts that are critical for building a solid Christian faith, and an understanding of God’s goodness and His never-ending love.

What is the greatest advice you have ever been given about writing?

I would say the greatest advice I was given was from best-selling author Francine Rivers, when I had the privilege of meeting with her one-on-one at a writer’s conference I attended in 2019. She said to not focus too much on platform building in the beginning. That surprised me because we hear so.very.often about how crucial this is for authors. But, I have to say, if I were to try and do everything I’m ‘supposed’ to do to build a successful platform, I’d be sitting in a pit of overwhelm. While platform certainly is an important piece to an author’s success, she advised me to put my main focus on reading multiple genres (good and bad writing) and learning to be the best writer I can be. She encouraged me to entrust the platform building to God knowing that He will be faithful to build it over time. Simple advice, but something I cherish.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this book to life?

Taking a complex and foundational Bible account and linking it to a relatable story thread for kids. The biblical account of Adam, Eve, and the Garden is critical for kids to understand because it’s essential to building a strong Christian worldview. It sets the foundation for why we need Jesus! But I didn’t want it to be a repetition of Bible facts like you might find in some children’s Bibles. This book delivers biblical truths of the Garden right alongside a heartwarming message of family, diversity, and God’s faithfulness, all through the eyes of curious young Lucy.

What was the most rewarding?

Sharing a story that showcases the beauty and diversity with which our Creator made the human family, with an emphasis on how we all go back to what I like to call the First Family: Adam and Eve. There has been much dissension recently in our culture over race. But really there is only one race. No matter the color of our skin, where we were born, or the languages we speak, we all go back to Adam and Eve in the Garden; and we are all created in God’s image.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

More than anything, this book series is meant to drive the truth home to young readers that their lives matter—that every life matters to God.
