The Garden Within by Dr. Anita Phillips #thegardenwithin #christianbooks #dranita @dranitaphillips @nelsonbooks

"Faith and mental stability aren't mutually exclusive."

I read this quote in a fictional book- When I Close My Eyes by Elizabeth Musser many years ago. Though I have read many books since that time, this line has stuck with me. As someone who is both a Christian AND has various mental health diagnoses, I have unfortunately seen all too often the attitude towards mental illness that exists among some Christians... an attitude that says if you just had a stronger faith, you would not be struggling. Not only is this completely inaccurate--- it's also a really dangerous idea too that can keep Christians from seeking the mental health services they need. Therapy vs. faith isn't an either/or situation... sometimes you need both prayer AND therapy... and that's okay.

When I saw this new book written by someone is both a Christian AND a mental health professional- The Garden Within by Dr. Anita Phillips, I was very excited to check it out. Take a look:

About the Book:
Too often we’ve been taught to view our emotions with suspicion, seeing them as something to be suppressed, managed, or mastered. This isn’t true. Emotions are not your enemy. Internal war is not your destiny. You were created to flourish.

In this game-changing book, trauma therapist and mental health expert Dr. Anita Phillips reveals how embracing emotion is the key to living your most powerful life. Just as gardens thrive in good ground, the abundant life you’ve been seeking can only be grown in the soil of your heart.

Blending faith, the latest discoveries in neurobiology, and her own research and work as a licensed therapist, Dr. Anita shows you how to cultivate a state of emotional well-being that can:

  • strengthen your body and reverse the effects of trauma,
  • calm anxiety and renew your mind, and
  • unleash a new level of spiritual power in your life.

This book will equip you with the tools you need to nurture a part of yourself that has been misunderstood for too long — your heart — setting you free to live just as the Creator intended.

About the Author:
Dr. Anita Phillips, LCSW-C is a trauma therapist, life coach, and minister. Widely recognized as a thought leader at the intersection of mental health, faith, and culture, Dr. Anita holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Regent University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is a dynamic speaker and podcast host who adores her family and friends, a good pint of ice cream, and sitting by the ocean.

The Garden Within was an instant New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller and has been featured on
SUPER SOUL PODCAST hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Oprah Daily, Red Table Talk, Essence, Tamron Hall, Woman Evolve, Proverbs 31, the Today Show, and more.

I loved that this book is written by a Christian trauma therapist and blends Biblical wisdom with that expertise in mental health. I think this is so very needed and have no doubts it can help many people.
